Strictly speaking, as long as you are within your calorie target, you should be fine going over on sugar.

Reasons when this may not be ok are
    - if you have some sort of medical issue, particularly with insulin
    - if eating that amount of sugar makes you crave more sugar and leads you to binge
    - if the calories spent on sugar have caused you to go under in protein and fat

This would only be a problem if it happens chronically. If it's just once in a blue, it's not even worth worrying about.

The only sugar in my diet is appearing naturally in fruits...which are good in fiber and nutrients, but I'm still going over just trying to get my recommended daily fruits. Why is MFP Sugar goals so low?

I've wondered about the sugar allowance as well. I don't drink sweetened drinks and I don't add sugar to foods except hot cereal on the weekends (although my weekday cereal, Optimum Slim, includes sweeteners). I do have chocolate as a treat and I do have fiber bars that include sweeteners (no more than one per day if that), but I really overshoot the sugar allowance!
