Bab's Ham & Pea Soup

Sure is soup weather in my neck of the woods. Made a great ham and pea soup today. Not your traditional recipe however, this one has grated carrot and sweet potato in it.
Ingredients-
1. 7 oz diced ham steak
2. 3 minced garlic cloves
3. 1/2 c chopped onion
4. 1/2 c grated carrot
5. 1 medium peeled and grated sweet potato
6. 1 bag dry split peas
7. 1 box unsalted chicken stock
8. 2 bay leafs
9. 1/2 tbsp liquid smoke
10. 1 tsp hot sauce
Directions-
1. Chop and saute the ham
2. Add all the vegetables and saute about 10 minutes
3. Add the bay leafs and dry split peas
4. Add the chicken stock, liquid smoke and hot sauce
5. Add about 2 cups of water to cover all the vegetables
6. Continue cooking until al the vegetables are tender and cooked down
7. May need to add some additional water if it becomes too thick
8. Cook on low about 2 hours
I like to cool and refrigerate over night to allow all the flavors to meld. Best served next day. You could also make this in the crock pot.
