Holiday Preparations

I just survived a birthday party hosted by the best (yet high calorie cooks) in the family. Discussion turned to the holidays. Turns out we will not gather as a mass extended family and will be dining as individual families. This enabled mom and I to discuss the menu (i.e. workload & temptations). At first my husband was whinning about no turkey, dressing, potatoes etc...... but we calmed his tantrum with the option of a good steak/salad and baked potato.
We are grillin' for Thanksgiving and either walking by the river or cross country skiiing. I guess that is left to mother nature. One holiday down....one to go. I am all for new traditions. My husband is thin... I may just buy him a little pecan pie to thank him for being flexible.

We do a BIG family get together with a lot of BIG people. I'm hoping that my cousin (3 years older than I am) being DX'd with diabetes will temper the food choices a bit this year, but I'm not counting on it. The usual suspects are a ham, a turkey, mashed potatoes (made with sour cream, butter, etc), pies, cobblers. Lots of soda too. I'm trying to decide if I should eat beforehand or bring something with me? Or maybe just be super careful and pick and choose what I can have (I can have turkey, salad, etc). Not sure.0

This is my second year hosting Thanksgiving but only my first year while trying to lose weight. I'm looking forward to it but also not looking forward to it *lol* We have a small gathering, just immediate family and a few friends. We're having the usual turkey, mashed potatoes (I make them plain now with just some milk and garlic, everyone can add butter and salt to taste), sweet potatoes (also plain, everyone can add their own sugar and butter), butternut squash bake, baked mac and cheese, green bean casserole (not doing the canned stuff this year), stuffing, carrots, rolls, and pumpkin pie tarts. I'm going to have a light lunch and try a small serving of everything.0

My husband and I are too busy with work to travel the 9 hours to visit our families this year; so we're having a "misfit Thanksgiving" with our friends from down here
It's being held at my best friend's house who's a total foodie like me; but she's at the strange part of her life where she wants to lose weight but doesn't want to 'push it' on anyone else; ie her BF. (I tell her skrew him he can eat a BUNCH of whatever healthy foods you make, he'll still love you etc etc but...her battle not mine) I can only suspect there will be booze involved; turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberry relish, someone is bringing green beans...random other things. I'm in charge of the spinach dip (which I am secretly making with low-fat sour cream and wheat bread muahahaha), and a veggie plate (I insisted on this one; that way I can eat a whole bunch of veggies while preparing everything). I'm also making cut-out cookies to decorate (cute and vulgar ones....we're all immature adults that are going :P ). Thankfully the batter is kind of plain and I will be having too much fun decorating the cookies to eat them!
Good luck everyone!!0 -
Is everyone ready for this weekend! Resist that extra piece of pie but don't make your self miserable because you aren't letting yourself have a good time. Enjoy a glass of wine/beer, have a slice of pumpkin pie, eat some mashed potatoes! Its ok0
