Who else cannot play open ended RPGs like Fallout/Skirym?

Maybe Im the only one, but I cannot play open ended RPGs. They scare me. Heres what I mean: I downloaded fallout 3, was playing it, and first off is the character creation. I know nothing about this game, how do I know which pointset to pick? What if I pick heavy gun skills, and I never can find a heavy gun, or melee skills, and Im always fighting people with guns, or charisma, and there is really noone I need to persuade? The next part is the first town. I get there and immediately Im asked to disarm the bomb, blow up the bomb, leave town, and/or save the town. Which do I do? I realize there is multiple endings, many ways to get there, but that makes me anxious. I like knowing that there is really only one way to play the game, one way to achieve it. Thats why I love shooters, because you always are just trying to kill everything between you and the end of the level. No questions asked. I can do MMORPGs, but Im not missing any storyline by my decisions I make there. Am I the only one who feels this way?

Bought Skyrim yesterday and got lost in the first hour of the game missioning through a mountain killing skeletons and what not. Also I find myself saving after each kill, sucked getting kill by a massive troll and then had to jog 20 minutes from my last save.0

Another big fear I have while playing0 -
It's REALLY hard to get lost in those games, and they way you play is up to YOU.
There is no one right way to play, so if you want to sneak around and be a thief and talk your way out of things, get skills that would lend them selves to that, like dexterity or charisma/comliness (or whatever they call them in whatever particular game)
Plus if you look to the top or bottom of the screen...there's an arrow that tells you where to go LOL. But you WILL run into other towns etc on the way...just talk to people, and get quests and complete quests etc.
The main game of Fallout New Vegas isn't that long...but I played it for over 80 hours because I was having fun being me in the world.
I'm playing Skyrim right now, got a quest to find a Dragon Claw from a merchant in the first town...I didn't have to go into the merchants place, but I did...now I'm in Blackfoot falls...just fought a gigantic badass looking Frostbite Spider (if that thing was wounded I don't want to know what the hell a healthy one can do) and am uncovering the secrets of that location.
So right away I deviated from the main quest to go exploring the world. It's a ROLE PLAYING GAME you put your life aside for a bit and you play as said character...you can do whatever you want, but remember, just like in the real world, it has consequences.
Oh as far as the save goes....F5 is your friend...quicksave my friend...takes less than 1/2 a second to do it.0 -
Oblivion had about 600 hours of playtime. Not sure about Skyrim though but from what I am witnessing looks like you can play for hours upon hours and not get bored.0
-
I *can* play them, obviously, since I started Skyrim last night (against my better judgment ). But I do know what you mean. It's kind of nerve-wracking with all those choices, and due to the sheer size of these games I have yet to beat one of them. But I have to remember that no matter what race/class/characteristics your character has, none is really *better* than the others. You can be successful with all of them. And yes, there are multiple endings, but that doesn't bother me. In a way, it's nice, because I don't have to worry about "completion." In other games, I'm always getting frustrated that I can't do all the side quests or find all the treasure or whatever. In this game, you can't possibly do everything, so it leaves you free to just do what you like.
It's funny, my husband played Skyrim for 3 or 4 hours yesterday, and I played for 2. He started first. Within 20 minutes of my game, I had already gone down a completely different storyline from his. For us, that's kind of cool because it means that he can play it when I'm awake without worrying too much about spoilers -- I mean, some events will be shared, but it's hard to know what those are, so it's ok if I see what he's doing.0 -

HA! I am SO in the same place as you. This is really my first open ended RPG and I learned last night the hard way that you need to save A LOT. I was overwhelmed by those zombie mummies and died and ended up way out by that campfire a ways back... frustrating! Mind you... I sure wasn't using the "block" feature... because I am a lame n00b. :P
It's taking some getting used to. I find that I can't play it for a long time because of the not-so-linear story line. I get bored easily. So I have been switching between the tail end of FF13 and Skyrim to try and shake things up.
It would be so nice to have a straight forward guide on how to approach Skyrim lol. I don't even know if I chose a class. I just started using a sword and sheild because I always play as warrior types. lol0 -

You chose a class when you created your character. You can't create your character without a class. The default is Imperial, I think, (maybe Nord, I can't remember) so if you didn't change it that's what you are.0 -

This is what open world RPG's are all about.. There is no right way or wrong way, YOU create the character and make your own adventure. If you find yourself getting bored with it, then these types of games probably just aren't for you. So far with Skyrim, I can't even comprehend how someone could get bored. I can easily lose 2-6 hours in the game without even knowing. It does a really great job of keeping you stimulated.
You need to go into games like this realizing that it's not so much about completion/getting somewhere as it is the journey to get there and the journey is what you make it. There is no right class or wrong class and there is no right or wrong order to do things in.0 -

Which is probably what is holding me back. I'm definitely not used to games like this...0 -

I can totally see that. It may just take some time getting used to. Of course these types of games aren't for everyone, I know a lot of people who don't like them....just like some people don't like linear games, shooters, puzzle or action/platform. To each their own0 -
i just dont enjoy offline games anymore. if its an rpg it has to be an MMORPG. if its sports it has to be against a human in some way. if its a shooter it has to be online.
only games i enjoy offline are simple things like tetris and breakout.0 -

Im the exact opposite....with the exception of sports and chesd, I HATE online games0 -
Yeah, I don't play online ever. Not even with people I know. It's just not fun for me. I like to go at my own pace and not worry about anybody else.0

yeah I totally hear you on this. hate open ended games. Tried to play morrowind and actually broke the damn thing by coming in at a city from a weird angle (their fault, not mine, IMO but still). Hate the idea that I might miss something.
But yeah we're apparently in the minority. Which must mean we are just way cooler than all these other people.
Plus it gives us a lot of extra free time! because all my friends who play stuff like this lose a LOT of hours to it .0 -

I don't think you are a minority, shooters like (Halo, COD, Battlefield and GOW ) are definitely more popular. More linear shooter RPG's like Mass Effect seem to appeal to a wider variety. Massive open world RPG's like Skyrim are hard to do right and when they are, they take quite a commitment and you don't receive much instant gratification.
*wow, typing and talking on the phone at the same time do not mix for me I guess Dx0 -

You chose a class when you created your character. You can't create your character without a class. The default is Imperial, I think, (maybe Nord, I can't remember) so if you didn't change it that's what you are.
*blink* I thought that was my RACE not class!
Um, those are races, not classes. You are right. Your race has little bearing on your class, though it will give bonuses that will help your class. Skyrim is different than Oblivion was because in Oblivion you had to chose your class at the beginning of the game (I can't remember if Morrowind was the same), whereas in Skyrim you are able to customize your class to what you want (which, you could do in Oblivion as well, but had to select that option). In Skyrim, you don't chose 'Assassin' or 'Warrior' or 'whatever' but you do make the selections for talents that those classes would use when you go into your talent screen/level up screen. So, for example, if you want to be a rogue/assassin, you would go into your talent screen and select talents that are beneficial, such as stealth, one-handed weapons, etc. So, pretty much there are no classes in Skyrim except those that you create yourself. I think it's rather cool.0 -
Everything you worry about it exactly what I love, lol
Makes a game replayable.
On the other hand, I cant play regular RPGs because Im impatient and bad at math.0 -
I am not in to RPG's like WoW, Dragon Age, Skyrim (though the last looks great)
But FO3 was the bomb cuz I love shooters.0 -
Like I said, probably in the minority, but I always wonder if Im the only one or not0
-
As a FPS fanatic myself. I think you really should play FO3 again. Cuz it really is a lot of gunning. I played it several times through. Once nice as hell and saved everything, then again as a theiving snake that killed most everything! Hahaha
Did you play/enjoy Bioshock 1&2?0 -

Thanks so much for the clarification! I did my character creation on a non-HD TV and was squinting to try and read everything. Good to know that I didn't miss something crucial!!0 -

I remember thinking the writing was really small on my big TV, I would imagine trying to read it on a tube would have been pretty difficult! hahaha0 -
Bought Skyrim yesterday and got lost in the first hour of the game missioning through a mountain killing skeletons and what not. Also I find myself saving after each kill, sucked getting kill by a massive troll and then had to jog 20 minutes from my last save.
Yesterday I killed a dragon and 5 minutes later, I fell off a cliff and died. Lesson learned.
Also, open world games are my absolute fave.0 -
Oh man... You can make some really grievous errors in those games! I was playing Fallout New Vegas and got myself in trouble with a faction... went through a huge camp and killed everything in sight. I didn't think the game would let you ruin everything... I was wrong. I got myself into a position where the game literally can't be finished. I had to find a save point that happened before the problem. I'm not good at saving different options, so I had to go all the way back to Level 4. Lame!
Still a great game, but I've started using the wiki information when I make a big decision. Or... before I go on a killing spree.0 -

Oh damn! Hahahaha. I didn't like FONV as good as FO3. And yeah, quick save is your friend!
Nice SN btw, I never did finish that 100 or so rounds to complete the DLC.0 -

Um...you can go another route, there was a glitch that had them all attack me on site, and I thought it ruined the game...it didn't. You destroy one faction there are others you can align with.0 -
So where are all the dragons you people are fighting???
I'm level 10 and haven't run into a single dragon yet LOL.0 -

The first dragon I killed was after I got the dragonstone and returned it to Whiterun, then we went to kill a dragon and ended up being a dragonborn...0
