Oh man... You can make some really grievous errors in those games! I was playing Fallout New Vegas and got myself in trouble with a faction... went through a huge camp and killed everything in sight. I didn't think the game would let you ruin everything... I was wrong. I got myself into a position where the game literally can't be finished. I had to find a save point that happened before the problem. I'm not good at saving different options, so I had to go all the way back to Level 4. Lame!

Still a great game, but I've started using the wiki information when I make a big decision. Or... before I go on a killing spree.

This post is the literal exact reason I cannot play these games

Um...you can go another route, there was a glitch that had them all attack me on site, and I thought it ruined the game...it didn't. You destroy one faction there are others you can align with.

It was Caesar's Legion right at the beginning of the quest where you're supposed to recover the Platinum Chip. I couldn't continue in any direction. He was stuck and wouldn't give it to me, so I killed him and it didn't drop. Suuuucked.

Alright guys, Ive made a decision. I will give a open ended RPG one last try over christmas break, but I need a suggestion. I like fps, so would FO be a good choice? If so, which one FO3 or FONV? What do you suggest. One last try, just to see if I can do it

It's funny because the same reasons you listed for why you find it difficult to play the games are some of the same reasons I love them so much.

At first, I was extremely anxious about it because I'm a little self-conscious about the fact that I am never extremely good at any of them, and I always assumed I was doing the 'wrong' thing or that I would mess it up in some way.

After playing for a while, though, I think the best part is that I don't have to worry that I'm doing it 'wrong' or that I'm not amazing at it or that I have to make certain choices and the story is only going to go one direction. In some of the games, it doesn't really matter what you do or say or choose, you'll ultimately go through the same basic story process, just maybe with some changes in the NPC reactions to you. In others, you might end up going an entirely different direction and altering the progress of the game, but that's okay, because there's still an ending out there for you somewhere, and maybe next time if I want to play it again, I'll do it differently and have an entirely different experience. I don't think I've ever come across a scenario where I made the wrong choice and it ruined everything, so I would have to say the odds of that are pretty rare (if those situations were common, I would be tripping into them daily, I promise you, lol).

Anyway, for what it's worth, I just wanted to say that I would recommend trying it again. Try to get past the worries you mentioned because in most cases, it's set up to allow you to be successful with nearly any combination or preference, so putting points in one skill or another rarely changes things. You'll have the options you need. :)

Personally, I liked FO3 waaaaay better than FONV. The thing I liked about FO3 was there was many more mutants to kill and DC being in ruins (I am close to DC and know the area well and seeing it mapped correctly and in shambles was cool IMO). You also didn't have a faction you "had" to join in some way or another like in FONV.

I haaaaaaaaaaated NV in comparison to 3. I had NO compassion for any characters in NV...where as in 3 I was absolutely attached to everyone I interacted with.

Charon was awesome. I loved that jerk. And the ghoul bartender I forget the name of. and Fawkes!
    omg.

But in NV...I just didnt care. I loved the Yes Man bot because he was amusing and because of who did his voice, and I liked killing the guy that killed me just cuz I wanted his suit.
I loved the different things I could do with House, too. Like when I found him in his little chamber and killed him. Like a boss.

That's the fun about open ended RPG's. You can play multiple times as different characters and choose different actions and skill sets. That's 100's and 100's of hours of gameplay and your experience as well as the outcome of the game will be different each time.

I agree. Fawkes was very cool. I also had Dogmeat along side of me. Heh. I played FO3 several times through along with every DLC 2+x (Except for The Pitt). I never bothered to play even one DLC on FONV. TBH I think i uninstalled the game and am done for good with it.

I downloaded and played ALL the dlc for FO3. Obsessively.
AND OMG DOGMEAT HES THE GREATEST.

I got the ability for two followers and loved having Dogmeat and Charon. I hated the brotherhood lady follower, she kept telling me she'd leave if I didn't start doing the mission I was on. I told her to *kitten* off and go home, I liked wandering.

Oh oh! THE GARYS. I loved that so so much. I want shirts for vault 106 and 108. Some of the most fun of that game was wandering. I read all the computers I came across. They were interesting!

New Vegas, tho....I beat that game in a hurry. Had a couple save files to see what different endings I could get, never bothered to explore em. I tried and felt like it was work so I quit.

That's funny, i'm considering doing the same thing just because everyone is so nuts about skyrim and I REALLY need a new game to play.

FO3 is $15. If youre gonna re-try open ended RPGs go cheap and classic

Cheap isnt really a big issue for me. I care more about it being able to run beautifully on my comp. When I had morrowind, the graphics were abismal, just made me lose interest. Im on the fence still though. I really like the niche world that FO3 has, very different than the norm
  • anyone who doesnt dig skyrim after actually playing it....*shudder* god....i i can't even imagine....

I got hooked on open ended games back in the 80s when I bought Sid Meijers "Pirates" for my commodore 64.

FO3 has some great storyline and characters...and makes you giggle quite a bit if you can give it some patience. The first few hours of play is reallllly slow tho

The more I think about it, the more I guess ill give FO3 a try. The niche post apocalyptic is cool, it does have 3d support I believe, so Ill give it a try. First Im gonna beat arkham city, but that will take me only a day probably

I have to admit I cheated a little. I like to tank. I have never been a fan of hit and run. Hack and slash is my way to go. So I went online and read about what attributes to select. My only mistake, if you can call it that, is that I went with favoring a 2-handed weapon rather than dual wield.
