Training Calves, and then Running

In my workout routines, I do total body weight training 3 days a week. In between those days I do cardio, and sometimes the cardio is running for about 4-5 miles. This morning I ran for 45 minutes, and afterwards even though I stretched out properly, my calves tightened up. Thanks to Tiger Balm (awesome stuff) they are feeling much better.
I am wondering if instead of working the calves on weight training days that maybe I could skip it since my cardio uses calves so much the next day? I was thinking of taking the calves out and training abs instead.
To work calves, I use machines, either the standing calf or seated calf, and on both machines I am currently doing 170 pounds for between 8-12 reps on 3 sets. I have great looking calves as it is and don't want to have to lather up with Tiger Balm after every cardio workout, but I don't want to lose what I have in the calves right now.
Any thoughts?

Personally, I would give it another week or so before changing anything.0
