I was recently (unofficially) offered another position at a hospital in Illinois to be hiring rather soon for ~60 hrs every two weeks. I just got a job at a nursing home which will be part time, but they might move me to full time. Both positions will be nights. Have you guys worked two jobs before? How did you not get burned out? Any tips? One is right next to my house and the other is 2 hrs away but in a compact state.

Yes I've worked 2 jobs at a time. It was for finacial reasons...you do what you have to do for whatever particular reason at that time in your life..With that being said I feel driving 4 hours round trip as a second job will wear on you especially if you're working nights. It could actually be an unsafe drive after working all night. Go with the one that you feel works best for you and what you want to do. If you're a new grad I would go with the one that would give you the most overall experience.
    good luck!

Ok...just read your introduction...if you want to eventually be in the ER go with the cardiac position....it will open more doors for you. Maybe do the rehab only 1-2 shifts a week or every 2 weeks.
  • I think I will be working rehab 2 shifts a week (probably weekends) and then the cardiac floor three shifts so I should get two days off to drive and sleep. Both will be nights so on the nights off, I can make the drive and it won't be that bad (I think). I want to work both to pay off my 5k in loans and get a down payment for a car (which I'll need soon because Ol Faithful isn't so faithful anymore) and then I'll pick the one I like the best. That time also gives me time to save up for moving to the cardiac job and getting an apartment!

It sounds like you have a good plan. Be careful driving that distance after working all night....I've been in a few scary situations driving home after working night shift. The cardiac job wil lead you to wherever you want to go so keep that in focus and you will succeed!

I presently have 3 jobs. 1 is part time and then my hospital job is fulltime and my third job is casual (pick-up basis). ts crazy, but somehow I make it work!

My children fondly joke with me about the year I had FIVE JOBS... I was working Per Diem at a University Hospital Children's ER, about 25 miles from my home, plus Per Diem at a community hospital ER about 8 miles from my home. Both of those were 7pm - 7am.

I also was working as an Adjunct Clinical Instructor for Pediatrics for TWO different universities.

In my "spare" time, I was doing Pediatric Home Health - I would see the kiddos that needed their Home Health visit either very early in the morning or very late at night.

That lasted a year, and I never knew if I was coming or going! My kids thought for sure that I would show up to work at the wrong place at some point, but I never did!

I'm currently working 2 jobs - my full time job is as a Quality Coordinator at the University Hospital, Mon-Fri... love it!

My 2nd job is that I'm actually SHARING a position as a Pediatric Adjunct Clinical Instructor. The clinicals are on Friday evenings from 3pm - 11pm, but since I'm sharing I only teach every OTHER Friday. I'm loving this and hope to keep doing it next year!
