She must not have rode the bus to school. School buses are where Santa goes to die.

LOL Kids tried to tell me that he wasn't real, but I didn't believe them. Like I said, my parents were incredibly convincing.

I didn't ride the bus until I was in middle school (I lived close to the elementary school so I walked).

*shrug* I'm not ashamed that I believed so long.

Told you, school bus. They may as well have Santa blood on the tires...

LOL I was 13 when I started riding the bus, so no! I actually was talking to my mom one day and asked her, and she told me.

My older kids were a bit annoyed when they found out. Enough so that I debated telling the youngest. I did end up doing the santa thing with my youngest. If he is annoyed with me for a bit when he is 9 or 10 I can take it. I feel like he would really be missing out on the magic of Christmas if I didn't do the whole Santa thing.

Jesus was born of a virgin....doesn't get much more magical than that ;)

I'm not critisizing, I totally get what you are saying and I know a lot of people who love Santa, it just made me laugh when I thought about a man coming down a chiminy vs. a boy born of a virgin
My son has zero idea who Jesus is.

My kids think it's about family and friends and the warm feeling of giving to others. For my oldest it's also about eggnog.

do you plan to teach your child about Jesus? Not the "God's son/savior" part, but just historically, that he was a person who inspired a bunch of people and started a religion?

My parents wanted to make sure I was educated about other religions, even though they wanted me to be a Christian, they didn't want me to be ignorant of who Buddha was (for example). They made sure I had a pretty good base of knowledge. I'm glad they spent extra effort on my education in that regard.

Same here. Mine are still young though, so we haven't really crossed into the whole religious aspect of it. Not sure how we're going to handle that honestly, because I actually enjoy the religious parts even though I'm a non-believer (I know, I'm a weirdo). But my parents are Christian as are DH's parents, so it'll be hard to keep them from all religious references.

He thinks its just something fun we do every year. Its when Santa comes, he gets to watch a Christmas story, drink hot chocolate and see all the grandma's. He has no idea of any religious aspect of anything (positive or negative). And when religion stuff is mentioned he just glosses over it lol (like the pledge of allegiance at school)

Its actually been very fun to watch him he is very organic. Even with Santa, we don't really do the whole "naughty or nice" thing. He just thinks its fun that he is coming to town. :)

They already know. They are 11 and 14. I was born and raised Catholic and my mom still attends church. They've been to a few services over the years. They know who Jesus is. They know who Mohammed is. They know who Buddha is. They know who Zeus is. They know that for many people Christmas is about the birth of Jesus and they know that whole story. We just don't practice religion.

I like the really religious songs lol (and I am also a non believer) But I grew up in a Christian home, so those songs for me, have been part of my growing up. My mom listens to Christmas music in the summer lol

You mean he doesn't even say that part of the pledge or sing that part of the song? That's pretty funny! He's going to be buddhist haha

I do, I probably would have already but my son was born with a really severe speech disorder. When I do talk to him about those things, I want to make sure that he understands, and I can answer his questions.

My two oldest children were born when I was a Christian. So they have always known. We talk very openly about religion in our home. I would say that our house (minus the youngest) is pretty educated in the religion department (all religions) and I think it will be fun to talk about it with my youngest. But for now, its actually kind of fun to watch him be himself. He has no belief, no non belief. He has empathy, ethics and as much self control as he can muster. lol

Sounds like you have awesome parents! Everything we teach our children (and students) is from a Catholic perspective, of course, but we teach about all religions, and even atheism. We would feel horrible if any of our children grew up bashing others for their beliefs/non beliefs, just as we would for race, socio-economics, or gender identity. Learn all you can about everyone. You don't have to like everyone, but you should respect everyone. [steps down from soap box].

Its actually a lot harder on kids than you would think, I have had older kids try to nicely explain (on their own) that they dont believe in anything and they were met with hostility. I certainly wouldn't set my first grader up for that kind of train wreck, at least not where I live. I volunteer a lot I haven't met too many deep thinkers at the age of 6 that would come up with that on their own. lol( I do think older kids do it on their own)

We do work on critical thinking skills though, that to me is the most important.

My older kids do have some beliefs, they go back and forth but I think they will have ultimately have belief in god, maybe not so much religion. I don't in any way put atheism on my youngest son (or any of my kids). I am actually very curious to see how his story turns out as far as religion goes. Either way, I am sure he will be a great hearted person who makes their choice based on his brains and what gives him the most peace.

Both of my kids knew that Santa was make believe. It never ruined Christmas for them. They are both adults now and still enjoy Christmas. I've taught my kids that the reason we celebrate Christmas is because it's a celebration of Christ's birth. I don't buy any Chistmas items (wrapping paper etc.) that has images of Santa or reindeer because for me Christmas is not about Santa or reindeer.

My kids will know Santa, but will know about the REAL Santa, St. Nicholas and the actual stories about him. We'll celebrate his day, Dec. 6 :) In addition to Christmas.

Oh, they'll know about him, unless you're going to shelter them from the world. So, just leave it up to others to tell your children about Santa Claus, which may or may not be what you'd like them to believe.

I just sent my college son a secret care package because his dorm is doing St. Nick's Project! Love it!
