One of the items I seriously struggle with is dry skin! My legs look like I am turning into an alligator. I am itchy! I drink a ton of water and put lotion on after my shower but it is not helping. Anyone have a great lotion/treatment they love that seems to help until my levels even back out?

I'm the same way! And, have been for about 10 years.

For the shower, I have two recommendations - both by Olay. One is a shower gel that has "Ribbons" in the title - can't remember the full name. It helps tremendously. Second, they have an in-the-shower moisturizer I swear by. You wash like normal, then put on the moisturizer, wait a minute and rinse off. Your skin will feel like it has moisturizer on it when you towel off, but it really works. Those products are the only things that save my torso during the winter. My legs are a constant battle, but they help there, too.

I haven't tried the olay products, because to me, the bottle reads "Oil of Old Lady."

Anyway, I agree that a moisturizing body wash is good in the wintertime. I usually get a store brand, but anything with a little bit of moisturizers in it is good.

As far as lotions go, avoid the non-greasy formulas. Just get something thick, sticky and gross. Bonus points if it has petroleum jelly, beeswax, or oil in it.

My levels are stable right now, so I don't have as many problems with skin and hair like I used to, but when I was having the dryness issues, I just skipped some of my showers. If you don't work out that day, you can probably bathe every other day. Although, now that I am working out, I don't miss a shower ever.

I have extremely sensitive skin and hypothyroidism, so I can relate to the difficulty of skin care. I use Burtie Bee's Shea Butter lotion and Milk and Honey lotion. Both are good, mostly natural and seem to have a lasting effect on the skin dryness I experience in the winter.
  • I used something called "The Naked Bee" when I lived in Las Vegas and the climate was 0% humidity year round. Not a lot of places sell it. I used to buy mine off ebay. It was the only moisturizer I did not have hives/acne/issues with. It also smells wonderful!

I think dry skin is just one of the many symptoms of hypothyroid.

I switched to non-sulfate products for bodywash, I use Jason's which I get at Whole Foods and use J&J shea & cocoa butter baby lotion.

I am going to try a supplement, evening primrose oil to see if that helps too. Will let you know!
