I think it might be the ketosis

When your body converts fat into energy, there are by products called ketones that are released into the blood. The body uses it for energy and the rest of that molecule, Acetone, is excreted through urination, and water vapor- Breathing/Sweating. You might have a sweet or fruity taste in your mouth and its perfectly normal. :) Hope this helps.

I just bought some test strips and apparently, I have low ketones. So that explains it. I just spent $70 on mouthwash, listerine strips for beside the bed, in my purse and bag, and breath spray.

My theory on the gas is that medifast converts fat directly into methane. There is no other explanation for the unworldly gas.

I won't touch their pancake syrup or any other with sorbitol in it. That stuff has your rocket boosters firing in just minutes. There are several that are tasty that use splenda thankfully since I LOVE the pancakes:)

I have a big stash of gum for that breath. I can't stand when I can taste it, then I wonder if everyone is grossed out when I talk to them.

Interestingly, I guess there are high ketones at night when I sleep - so that is why I'm driving my husband to face the wall in despair. (Seriously, this is how I found out about the dragon breath.) I'm now waking up in the middle of the night and using mouthwash.

I am kind of a nutrition freak and the breath is from the ketosis. Also for those of you with gas issues, try not to use anything with splenda, use stevia outside the meal plan. It will help a lot. I try not to even use any the artificial stuff other then the plan. When you have a lot of fructose your body can 't break it down. It can only have so much a day. I am actually frutose malabsorption so I eat no fruit or anything. Again if you are adding fruit that will make more gas. I need to be at 1000 cal a day at most, so sometimes I even do only 4 meals not 5 and fill up on salad. This also helps with gas. Also inulin and chicory root cause gas. Look at the ingredients.
If you can pick foods with the least amount you are better off. it builds up, that is why end of day is worse. I also follow the gluten free plan. so it limits me to begin with. Being on this with fructose is hard but we were down to this or HCG because of a metabolism issue.

Closys mouthwash seems to be helping, just as an FYI.

I have also noticed the bad breath/after taste but since this is my second week I'm still learning what's "normal" and what isn't! And...holy cow about the gas! Good thing I've been home this week! Just sayin...
