(Hopefully we'll have plenty of our male counter-parts to weigh in on this ...)

Who has it easier - women or men, when it comes to losing weight quicker and more efficiently?

And why do you think that?

I usually start my posts off, but honestly, I haven't the foggiest idea -

Anyone want to give their best educated guess or share knowledge?

  • Statistics say men lose weight faster. this is mainly due to a higher average muscle mass, as well as size in general (bigger takes more calories.)

For example, to lose 1.5 pounds a week, (according to this site) I can eat 2580 calories a day. 3100 would keep me at my current weight. (I'm 6'3", 317 lbs, was 325 on the 1st)

It's easier to eat 2500 calories in a day, than 1200 that so many people need for weight loss... of course on a bad day prior to my diet I ate 6000+, so, I'm still eating about half what I used to, so it's all relative.

But as long as I restrict my intake, I'll lose faster than anybody who weighs less than 200, cause they just CAN'T clock in at 1000+ calories below their maintenance number.
  • Well let's see. I am giving my husband what I have been making as dinners and lunches but just upping certain things for him as he is a carpenter and very active on the job and needs way more calories than I do. He still comes home, drinks a couple of beers - He has lost 10 lbs and he is not even trying.

Women eat too much chocolate? Seriously, isn't it because of their metabolism? Plus they don't have to deal with the "monthly" issues where you gain 5 lbs. in one week just because it's that time of the month. Then you get discourage cuz you may crave salty foods, like that's gonna help!
  • men or women doesnt make a difference, each person is unique in there own way, everyone responds differently to everything, as long as there dedication is there and there willing to put in the work men and women can reach there goals

I'm going to go with men also. My husband dropped 50lbs without much effort on his part and has kept it off for over 3 years now, in that time I've lost 60lbs regained all of it plus 10, then restarted and lost 30 of the 60 I gained.

I agree with this to a point. My goals are absolutely attainable and I will reach them this time. But I'm having to work for them. My husband on the other hand did not have to work as hard and has maintained his goal weight quite easily.

i understand your veiw on this, and appreciate the hard work you are and are going to put in, but its not because man /women ...everyone is different, i have seen it a thousand times one thing works for one but not another, not because of there gender, but beacuse of there unique makeup..... you couls lose 2times as much as a man that lives down the road, its all deopendent upon each individual person

    Men!!!!
They have a faster metabolism and their bodies are not predisposed to carrying extra fat just to help with pregnancy!!
  • My husband and I just had this discussion this morning. He has lost 15 pounds in 3 weeks .... doing MFP. He claims it's because he is just more diligent, but I think it's a combination of his diligence and men's ability to burn calories more efficiently.

That said, I kind of suspect that he's right.

As a person with a smaller body mass than him (he's 5" taller, but I have am bigger boned and he is finer boned) my BMR is lower than his, so if we're eating the same net umber of calories then I won't lose as fast as he does. I figure I'd have to eat 1000 calories a day and exercise as much as he does (400 kc/day) to keep up. Bummer ...
