I'd love to hear about other people's relationship with the open road... Mine is a very short one and has taken MONTHS to get almost there!
I'm a non-runner!!! Don't get they hype about the endorphins - guess it's because I haven't run far enough EVER!
(I think that I'm on my way to somewhere though, just not sure where yet! For those of you that think you can't take a look and see if you can see yourself in this story.)
I do know though that I started out at about 214lbs. Did nothing for the first 3 weeks or so except change my diet and LOST. (I knew it wouldn't keep up forever though!) So I started on a little step machine thingy that we had hiding under the bed. I counted steps for a couple of weeks - pretty much every night... 10 minutes to 20 minutes... I couldn't do much more!
Discovering a heart rate monitor was probably my biggest motivator (it was a cheap one from Tesco, local supermarket, and is now due for retirement) and then I hit they gym for the first time. I also had my feet tested and got a pair of suitable trainers - that was my biggest expense. Speed on the treadmill was 5.5 and I spent more time walking than running. For the 10 minutes on it was 1 minute run, 2 minutes walk - yes, yes, I know it should be the other way round!:grumble:
I've moved house and fallen off the rails a couple of times. All the usual excuses, I know you've heard them all before!!!
Now I warm up on the step machine for 10-20 minutes (it's often below 0*C outside) shuffle around the block, including 'hills' for 30 minutes on a good night, dog for company. I know that I burn more doing that than my silly step machine!
For the first time ever I'm considering a 'fun' run. I'm going to convince myself more about the fun... I KNOW it will be!!! (Or at least burning the calories will be!)

Cool! Do you have a local gym where you can start the "C25K" journey with us? The weather doesn't really help (here in Massachusetts is actually dangerous with all this snow!) We would love to read about your progress so, don't be a stranger!
Btw, thanks for sharing your story! :happy:0 -
I wanted to run because everyone I know who does is in great shape. But I found I had exercise urticaria which meant when I was going out I was itching and burning in my muscles and I was in pain all over my body and then I would start panicking and feel sick. It's been 2 years of forcing myself to get back out there every time and it hasn't been easy. I am starting to feel in control and also a lot fitter. I had a great 3 mile jog this morning
My goals this year are
1/2 marathon 25th March even if I walk most of it!
10K in June and 5K in July0 -
Ely I'm a complete numpty.. Know nothing about C25K although I know that it's something that lots of MFPers talk about.
Fitty (because I can't bring myself to call you Fatty...) I have NO excuses and battle to move my butt... Just lazy! I really think I should sort myself out!
My heart rate monitor was what really got me going... I saw how many more calories I burned on the road than on the treadmill even though it felt like half the speed!!!
I would really like a GOOD HRM now, one that can count my swimming and running cals and tell me how far I've gone... Making dinner and doing the dishes would be added perks!!! Need to get looking and researching0
