The 1st weeks after surgery.

So I am wondering how much weight have any of you lost in the first 3 weeks? I worry that I have not done well. I know that is silly and that every one loses differently, but I really would love to know how every one else has done. And also is there a real calorie count we should be using? I know I do not get in enough every day. Average calorie intake for me is 700 a day.

Don't worry about how other people do and don't compare yourself to others. I gained 15# in IV fluids when I had WLS and it took me over a week to get rid of the extra fluid. It was just fluid but it pissed me off anyway. Just do what the doctor tells you to do and you will be fine. Everybody loses at their own pace so keep doing what you're doing and you will do great. Your doctor or his dietician should give you your calorie goals. It is hard, especially in the beginning, to get in enough calories (I still have problems) but just keep trying, and get in a lot of protein and water. Good luck!0

Skatermom is spot on. No way you can start plotting, worrying, being concerned about weight loss those first weeks. With the RNY, so much has happened to your body it takes a while for it to get back into sync. I was on IV from an hour before surgery until the day I was released (36 straight hours). Despite no eating, I didn't drink for the first 24hrs, then medicine cups of H2O (2/hr) the next day. Only on the day I left (3rd day) did I get to sip apple juice. I was told my my ICU nurse, before I left for the general floor, I'd gained 3lbs!!! She also said it may take 7-10 days to drop all of that IV fluid. Now, due to an allegic reaction, I'm on prednisone for 5 days. That means water retension - how much, who knows. So many changes going on in your body. Don't fret about it. I'm only 8 days out of surgery and my only concerns are related to balancing intake/protein/sugar and exercise (moving around the house). I won't worry about weight issues until after I'm back to work in 3 more weeks.
Hope that helps.
