Anyone with past injuries/surgeries?

I'm seriously considering doing C25K. I've wanted to for about 2 years now and my fiance successfully went through it once. I had hammertoe surgery in college on my left foot. My dumba$$ doctor didn't put me through any kind of rehab or PT, though I have discovered since then that a lot of people who have this surgery have that option. Anyway - my left foot swells during the summer, is a ice cold brick in the winter. (I have several screws and wires in my foot bones.) My big toe does not bend. At all. This doesn't make exercising impossible, but I do try to keep my foot in mind before trying new things. I do Zumba every week, and have a bunch of Jillian Michaels videos at home that I do weekly as well.
My question is: has anyone with past foot injuries or surgeries done C25K and what was your experience? My foot has been my only fear about starting the program. I know I should probably just go out there and try it out, but with my foot being such a baby, I want to go get fitted at a running store and buy the proper shoes for my gait, etc. I don't feel like spending tons of money to then find out I can't do this.

about 6 years ago I broke my leg...and not just a normal broken leg...I broke it into 5 pieces that were stacked up like dominos. 2 compound fractures. I had to have extensive surgery and several months to recover. I still have a metal bar in my leg to this day.
To answer your question...I just finished week 3. Its hard. But I don't feel like my leg is holding me back at all.0 -

I was hesitant to start this program as well because of my feet issues. I had always had aches and pains in my feet for years. Then about 4 years ago I woke up one day and couldn't hardly walk. I went to a podiatrist who said I had 'flat feet' and would never be able to dance again (I had been bellydancing for years). He just wanted to give me some pain meds/ani-inflammatories and send me on my way. I said I wasn't going to just pop pills and could I have some PT. I thought it was crazy he never even suggested it! So, he sent me to PT for 6 weeks. My physical therapist told me I didn't have flat feet but stiff arches. So I don't have any mechanism in my feet to absorb shock. The PT definitely helped but it was a long road to recovery. It took me an entire year to heal and stop hobbling around in horrible pain.
Like you, I am a baby about my feet. I prefer low impact exercises and even took up cycling. This year was the first year I even considered jogging and doing this program. But, I feel, as long as I go slow, I can do it. I'm just now finishing up my second week. I do enjoy it but have experienced some pain in all kinds of areas, not just my feet. But, I ice EVERYDAY, whether I jog or not. In fact, I've even started forcing myself to do ice baths. Icing has helped tremendously! I do it for about 20 mins everyday at the end of the day and its kept me from popping anti-inflammatories like candy.
I do agree that you need good shoes. I have some basic tennis shoes now that have inserts but I know I need to go to Fleet Feet to have my gait analyzed and buy some good shoes. My friend who runs marathons says it does make a difference and she actually is the one who told me about ice baths.
I think you should try it and just go as slow as you need. Sometimes when some pain hits me I just jog lightly in place until it goes away but I keep going. I tell myself, atleast I'm jogging, even if I'm going at a snails pace! I hope this helps0 -
That does, thank you so much for your input! I'm glad I'm not the only one that babies my foot.0

I've had two surgeries on my ankle and have quite a few screws in there holding things together. I also broke my big toe a while ago and it doesn't really bend anymore (it will a little bit, but it hurts!). Anyway, my ankle does bother me some- it was worse the first few weeks and now it's getting better. Good shoes made a big difference for me0

Hi! I haven't had any feet issues but ahd a really bad back injury a couple years ago, I doslocated my spine from my pelvic bone! It ahs hurt and bothered me since then... UNTIL I started running and doing yoga and losing weight. I think all the work is strngthening my muscles to help suooprt the injury! I know it's not feet, and is different muscles but My back used to kill if I walked 3 miles, now I can run 2 and walk 1 mile and come home feeling better and don't have pain anymore. Try it and see, it may or may not help. I got some good running shoes at TJmaxx for $30! Look around you may find some that don't break the bank0
