Hello all,
Could you tell me what on know on this: once you are hypothyroid as a result of Hahimoto, do you still have ups and downs like when Hashi is acting on your thyroid, or has Hashi completely killed off your thyroid and you just remain Hypo and that's all?
Does that make sense? Shall i rephrase?
Tx

I've only been hypo so far, but from what I've read and from talking to my friend with Hashi's, you can definitely go back to hyper after being hypo.0

I was (finally) diagnosed with Hashimoto's thyroiditus in 2006 after years of going from doctor to doctor and being told nothing was wrong with me. Doctors are so quick to prescribe antidepressants (which I refused, because I knew that wasn't the problem) instead of spending 15 minutes or less in diagnosing their patients...but I digress.
I did a lot of research on the internet to learn about Hashi's, (again, no information provided by doc's) and the website stopthethyroidmadness.com is a wealth of information. Also, google Mary Shomon and find her website. I bought one of her books too.
I think everyone's experience is unique to them. But to answer your question, I have been hypothyroid all this time, I do not believe I switch between hyper/hypo. For me, synthetic thyroid hormones (specifically levoxyl was like poison in my body), I did take a cocktail of synthroid & cytomel which was better but armour thyroid medication works best for me (I take 30 mg and it seems to do the job).
I am post-menopausal and I would say that after the cessation of my periods I feel much better! I have lots of energy, my skin looks great and I feel a lot better that I did in my 40's!
I do not know what the long term outlook is for my thyroid. I was being checked quarterly, then twice a year and now just go for an annual visit (unless I feel I need to be seen) and take things as they come.
Good luck with figuring it all out. It's all trial/error!

Funny this question should be here -- I just returned from my Naturopath - he took blood today to check my levels, but he thinks I am currently in a thyroid "storm" caused by a combination of the Hashimoto, the cold I had for 3 weeks that stoked my immune system, and transitioning to Armour at the same time. He believes I may be swinging between hypo and hyper -- my blood pressure rises and falls on a whim, my hands and feet are cold, but my face and neck are hot, major brain fog, blurry vision, ringing in ears and general lack of energy.
He's hoping to have the results back tomorrow - I leave for a business trip to CA on Monday and need to know how to dose on Armour while I am gone!0 -

In my case, yes it is possible to go from hypo to hyper if you have Hashimotos. I lost 40 pounds very unexpectedly about 3 years ago, without trying. When I had gained at least 25 of it back without changing anything with my diet and exercise, I finally decided to see an endocrinologst who finally gave me the Hashi's dx.
The endo put me on Armor and a vit D supplement and overall, I feel pretty good.
I go back for a check-up with him in a couple weeks to see how everything is going.0 -

Wow - 5.8 is high! The new levels consider anything over 3.3 to be high. I'm waiting for my blood work now - doc thinks I am swinging between hypo and hyper - I wouldn't wish this on anyone!!0
