Hard to Stay on Diet During Fibro Flare

I am having a serious fibro flare up. I am soooo sore! I find it harder to avoid junk food during my flare ups. I think I want the junk food because it is a treat when I am having such a hard time. Of course I know the junk food probably hurts me more than helps me. Anyone have any suggestions for how to stay on track during a flare up?

I am no angel, I do the same thing you do from tme to time. I have fibro, arthritis, the list goes on, but there are times that when I am in extreme pain, which I have been for about a week, our weather is very cold, snowy, windy and that triggers me, but, I go to my bedroom, away from food, lay on heating pad, and either drift away or read, or listen to very soothing music, it has to be soothing. Good luck to you.

Oh, hon - I feel your pain (literally and figuratively)...it's so hard when all you really want is some good ol' comfort food to get those endorphins going...do gentle things for yourself, GOOD things...lie on a heating pad and read a book, listen to some soothing music...and I always try to remember - this too shall pass (only until the next time, I know).

    Take care of yourself :flowerforyou:
  • i was just going to post about this. i have noticed (and noticed it today for sure because i'm flaring, but it's a small one so far) that i'm starving today. i just want food ANY food. but especially sugary food. i was laying in the bed reading and had to get up and have some gluten free cookies, then some aunt jemina waffles with homemade organic grape spread. then later i had to have a chefs salad for dinner. i'm just hungry. but now that i see it's normal i can try to handle it. at least i drank a few glasses of water and that is good. lol!
  • Oh I am so glad I read this! I thought it was just me. When I'm having a flare up I just want to eat and eat and not even care about what it is!! It's usually junk food. I also never feel like cooking much either which opens the door for more junk food/quick food to be invited in. Sorry that this is more common than I thought but at least I know I'm not the only one.

Isn't it amazing how so many of us go thru the same thing and yet we feel so alone. I think the wanting to eat constantly during a flare up is largely due to depression from the pain. so, it's just a vicious cycle, trying to control the pain, eating and depression. does anyone have an answer for that?

I feel your pain and frustration. I go through the same thing. I have gotten where I had to quit buying a lot of things and start buying items that would help me lose weight better. Now I make sure that I buy lots of fruits and vegetables I really enjoy. I just went on a banana kick. They sounded wonderful so I bought a bunch. Now I have a craving for grapes. So I will go to the store later for those. I always try to have something around that I really love that is good for me and feels like a treat. That way I don't feel deprived. As long as you don't go over your calories, does it really matter if you eat off and on all day. I don't think so. Your body is needing something and trying to let you know. Besides eating a bit all through the day is way easier on the body.

During a flare, my body/brain tells me, "You have no energy. Eat. You'll feel better."

I had a really bad flare up this last week. I do the same thing. It hurts to stand up, sit down, lay down and food is my go to distraction and it just makes the pain worse. Does anyone get bright red cheeks during their flare up?
  • i don't always have the fierce pain that most ppl with fibro do. but i do get weird shooting pans, migraines and heavy fatigue during the flares. my daughter thinks it's the body telling me that i need energy to make it through the flare so it makes me horribly hungry. food = energy and it sounds logical to me.

i really only get it when i get in the sun. then my whole face turns beet red and i get instant flare. if i don't get out of the heat i can pass out. really annoying since it's hot all summer and i have to stay in the shade. i also sweat profusely at the first sign of heat. which can be very embarrassing also if nobody else is.
