I see where there is a low carb yogurt out, I think by Dannon, what do you all think about it? Is it considered too processed for our Primal diets? Just wondering...

Looking at Dannon's website, I pulled up the nutritional information here. This is for a pack of their carb/diabettic light and fit yogurt.

The couple things that bother me are aspartame and sucralose. These are artificial sweeteners.
I've seen several lo-carb and paleo bloggers say that recent medical studies suggest that artificial sweeteners trigger a similar reaction as regular sugar, because the brain registers it as sweet.
I generally try to avoid everything sweet, because either it has sugars, or artificial sweeteners, neither of which work with paleo-primal, from what I've read.0 -
Thanks for checking, I figured that'd be the case. :ohwell:0

I avoid any of the big company yogurts...too much sugar. Plus, I've read that the big batches do not have the good bacteria as they have to heat it up so much that it kills much of it off. I try to buy small company greek yogurt, plain.
I'm interested in trying Keffir. I hear the fermented milk product is very beneficial for losing weight...anybody have experience with Keffir?0 -
I eat Keffir and like it. I get mine at Trader Joe's, and will use it in smoothies or just like regular yogurt. Good stuff.0

The problems with a lot of kefirs/yogurts is that they contain sugar. If you use either of these they should be full fat/ non-sweetened. Full fat, because they replace the fat in low-fat/non-fat with some sort of carbs; non-sweetened because even artificial sweeteners cause an insulin spike - and avoiding this is one of the basic tenets of a primal/paleo lifestyle.
Try goat milk yogurt instead of cow yogurt. It is thick like 'greek' yogurt and milder, so it is easier to eat without sweeteners. Goat milk products are also more easily digestible than cow's milk.0 -

Kefir is absolutely awesome... if you make it yourself. Store bought kefir is loaded with sugar and has dramatically reduced amount and diversity of probiotic flora. My wife makes it daily for the family and it rocks.0 -

Any links to your wife's recipe online, or a good page on this? I would like to try this.

You need to get kefir grains by ordering them from somewhere or getting them from a friend. Then you just feed it milk daily and harvest the kefir. It is crazy easy once you have the grains going.
she got her grains from a friend, but a little googling would find a source I imagine.0
