Saw this article and all I can say is WTF! While I understand the intent, this is sooo the wrong way to go about it.
The title of the article: Virginia House Getting All Up In Your Vagina.

I think the picture in that story speaks for itself. The state-mandated coercive procedure meets the legal definition of rape, IMO. It is just another attempt by ideological and religious extremists to establish a de facto theocracy, based on principles the Taliban would be proud of.0

One of the first comments I saw -- "Oh sure NOW they love science!"
I love our house, neighborhood, neighbors, schools, community, scout troop, climate, environment, etc but I absolutely LOATHE the politicians here.0 -
The worst thing is that some dems apparently tried to tack on an ammendement so that all women got free ultrasounds throughout the pregnancy. Nope. They only want the baby to be born. **** actully doing something to help it!
I hate Republicans and I can't stand pro-lifers who don't care about babies. They just prefer to rape women and strip all their rights away.0 -

I know what you meant, but your last sentence is a bit offensive and brash.0 -
My head almost exploded when I read about this yesterday.0

Wow! I don't even know where to start with this one so I will just walk away from this because that is so ignorant! And that's me being polite and trying to not lose my temper.0 -

Disgusting. I don't have the words.
Isn't this the same state where the gov tried to impose imprisonment for women who miscarried and couldn't prove that they didn't cause the miscarriage?
Shame shame shame0 -

Yes Kaitlin this was last year. I just looked it up and it was Georgia.
http://www.actionnewsjax.com/content/topstories/story/Miscarriages-a-crime-One-GA-lawmakers/Wb7lbbyhkUCZ66LxFeFRDg.cspx
From the article:
"The legislation from Rep. Bobby Franklin, a Republican, would make all abortions, described as "prenatal murder," illegal based on the belief that all life begins at conception. The bill's definition of "prenatal murder" excludes miscarriages "so long as there is no human involvement whatsoever" in causing them. Anyone convicted would face the death penalty or life behind bars."
Basically it would have given the government the right to question women who have suffered a miscarriage to determine whether the woman caused it. But they didn't define what human involvement is.
This is funny: http://www.feministe.us/blog/archives/2011/02/25/dear-rep-franklin-i-submit-my-used-tampon-as-evidence/
I don't know what happened to the bill in the end, but he won't be proposing any such laws anytime soon:

I just did some reading on this and at least the woman has the option not to view the ultrasound (not that the law is OK just because of this).
But just read this in another article:
"In Texas, a U.S. federal judge recently upheld a part of the law that would also require providers to describe and/or show a woman images of her fetus and require her to listen to the fetal heartbeat. "
Now THAT is what I have a huge problem with.0 -

I do however think that what you mentioned was about a law in Georgia that some crazy person tried to pass. I think he also wanted the death penalty to be an option. It was beyond strange.0 -

Yeah it was in Georgia. They would have had to report the miscarriage to the local police and there would have been an investigation that would have had to satisfy the government that the woman didn't cause the miscarriage (ie there was no human involvement). But there's no way to prove with 100% certainty what did or did not cause a miscarriage except in exceptional clear cut cases (which is probably a very very low % of all miscarriages).
Totally bizarre. It's scary to think there are people (and people who have been elected, no less) who would come up with such invasive and offensive crap.0 -

Its a complete disconnect from reality. There is nothing scarier than an elected zealot with the power to write legislation.
I know people were offended by Lozze's post but if you keep electing people who are basically writing legislation for state sanctioned rape and trying to imprison women for miscarriages you have to expect there are going to be some hard feelings from a lot of people. The GOP was not always like this.0 -
Ok, I'm stealing this--but I think it's pretty funny:Perhaps we should require invasive colonoscopies for Republican male "pro-life" politicians to provide them more "information" about the location of their senses of conscience and empathy.0

Booo NBC won't allow its videos to be streamed in Canada so I can't watch the SNL skit. I'm sure it's a good one!!0

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/jun/24/america-pregnant-women-murder-charges
Mississippi, Alabama, Indiana, South Carolina ... according to this article, 38 of 50 states have foetal homicide laws that can, and are being used to prosecute women whose actions are deemed to have been possible causes for miscarriage or foetal death. Very, very worrying.0 -
Sheesh I would love to see how they could 'make' someone listen to a heartbeat or look at a picture...I can see many women crossing there eyes and singing, "lalalalalalalalalalalalalala..."
The way this country is going is scaring the crap out of me! What happened to America the Free? What happened to the government that was by the people for the people???
And about the causing a miscarriage...I think eggplant has something in it that can trigger labor....I remember my OB warning me against it when I was preggers......so I guess next will be making it illegal to grow/eat eggplant....or how about riding in a car and going over speed bumps? Or working? How about even walking? If these nut jobs continue to have their way I can see pregnant women being put on house arrest with an ankle bracelet that monitors her life signs as well as where she is....0 -
As a woman who has had a miscarriage this outrages me in so many ways. *kitten*.0

Yes you're entirely right in your last paragraph. There is soooo much that pregnant women are warned about, other than the obvious - coffee, soft cheeses, deli meat, etc etc. I've had a miscarriage of a very much wanted baby and I'd like to see some cop try to question me about my eating/sleeping/lifestyle habits after a miscarriage. It wouldn't be pretty, I'd probably end up in jail for REAL homicide.0 -
Looks like they are walking back their state sponsored rape.0

Seems like once the governor came out of the bubble for a little fresh air, he was bi!ch-slapped by the reality of some ticked off women.0 -
Glad to hear that he came back to the land of reality. Unfortunately, I read the other day that there are several other states that
are considering this as well though. Now if only I could remember where I read it!0 -
Pennsylvania's next up. Not sure if the ultrasound required is internal or not, though there's a lovely little clause that 'allows' women to close their eyes during the scan. They are still required to deliver a photographic image to their provider, however. And the bill is being called the 'Woman's Right to Know'... How about a woman's right to make a choice for herself and follow through without being harassed all the way to the surgery?0
