While my gym has a nice array of dumbbells, they are rather lacking for weights. For the seated rows, is the seated row machine an acceptable alternative or should I use a variation with dumbbells instead?

Lou Schuler said that the cable station is an exception to the "machines are bad" rule. Seated cable rows are perfectly acceptable.

It's just a regular machine, not cable. I used it yesterday but might try something else instead.

You can do bent-over rows with dumbbells. Soft knees, flat back, neck neutral, arms hanging to the floor. Pull straight up toward your ribs, letting your elbows go up past your back. You should feel this mainly between your shoulder blades. Have fun!!
