THE FRAMEWORK OF A DAY IN WORDS
[a sample list for the day will follow in the next post]
BREAKFAST
A healthy happy day rolls something like this... Pop open your peepers early. Brush your teeth, drink a large class of warm purified water (with cayenne pepper and some lemon/lime juice), and get your butt to the meditation cushion! Deal with your chaos for about fifteen to twenty minutes and follow it with green juice and other God pod maintenance (like dry brushing, neti, yoga, walking, etc) [I'll explain in another post on dry brushing and neti use].
Ideally you want to consume only liquids till noon. That means green juice, green smoothies [recipes to follow right after this post], purified water, and teas. Keep in mind that you can have several servings. If that's not enough for you, no worries, solid foods are definitely an option.
LUNCH/DINNER
Lunch and dinner follow the 40/60 to 80/20 ration. In simple speak: Slightly more than half of your plate should be covered with alkaline veggie dishes (salads, steamed or lightly sauteed greens and veggies). [I explain alkaline down below.] Got it? Take a look at the following menu sample for creative ideas."
[The menu will be the next post - beyond the sample menu the author leaves the menu in our hands. This is where I'll provide some guidance with the recipes. Back to her words...]
THE FAST ON THE SEVENTH DAY
"Let's get back to the emotional. I'll help you deal with the emotional gunk! On the seventh day of each week, you will have the opportunity to fast - remember this is optional."
[The fast is a juice fast. So green smoothies and green juices all day. If you feel you need solids, then you'd want to stick to water based vegetables like zucchini, cucumbers, greens, lettuce, etc. You want solid foods that won't put your digestion to work by processing fiber.]
"The seven day sample menu is not a prescription, so you don't have to follow it to the letter. Remember that you can always amp up portions sizes when you like; the fun thing about this way of eating is that volume is okay! It just means more alkaline goodness. For some, this actually might seem like a lot of food! If you're used to a cup of coffee and a cracker, then heck yeah, feeding yourself an abundance of alkaline goodness might be hard at first. Listen to your body and adjust accordingly."
DESSERT
"As for dessert, I don't recommend planning on having it each night. But on nights when you really need a sweet treat, opt for 70 percent dark chocolate, a serving of seasonal fruit, or a vegan mousse/pudding made with cacao"
That's all in the words of the author Kriss Karr. Now on to other stuff.
ALKALINE VS. ACIDIC FOODS
This cleanse works in most part because it helps us find the pH balance in our bodies. The pH balance is what cures the cells and heals the body. It's what revs up the metabolism and get's everything working as it should.
The acid/alkaline balance, which relates to the chemistry of your body's fluids and tissues as measured by pH. The rebel/rogue = acidic foods. The nice ones = alkaline foods. The nice guy gives you energy; he's reliable and trustworthy. The nice guy helps you clean your temple. The rebel allows you to let your hair down and have fun, but it comes at a cost. He saps your energy. In time, a steady diet of the rebel will burn you out and kill off your cells. The rebel comes in the form of junk food, saturated fats, sugar, and booze. The nice guy comes in the form of fruits and veggies, which may seem boring at first, but let's give it a chance! We're creative souls, inspired and brilliant. I just can't wait to see what we come up with as a group!
The goal is to provide a peaceful environment for our cells that will allow them to receive the nourishment they need while excreting the waste with ease. Our diet is built completely on this concept.
I will post a list of alkaline foods vs. acidic foods in the next post, along with the sample menu.
WHY AM I DOING THIS??
Keep in mind the why's behind our efforts to do this. Keeping the human body in an acidic environment has been traced back to many illnesses including, runny noses, skin eruptions, heartburn, eczema, inflammation, arthritis, poor circulation, chronic fatigue, irritable bowel syndrome, a weakened immune system, obesity, yeast infections, migraines, cold/flus, - and yes- even cancer.
Besides the foods, other things that contribute to acidic environments?? Lack of exercise, anger, drugs, cigs, alcohol, and unchecked stress. The stress is particularly dangerous as it releases acid-forming hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline that flood our systems and muck up the soil, a.k.a. slows down our systems, keeping all the calories and fat stuck to our temples, while not excreting the waste. No wonder I feel backed up! lol.
There you go.. When we're feeling like "the heck with this!," come back here and let's remind ourselves why we're stepping outside of our comfort zones to do this. This is about our temples. This is about being healthier, feeling awesome, and looking fabulous - for the REST OF LIVES. And it all starts here. Woo hoo!!
