Hi my fellow hypothyroid group!
I was just wondering if any of you have ever tried going on a Meal Replacement Shakes to help with your weightloss?
Any success stories with them?

My diet is mainly Working out allllll the time and eating low calorie 1200-1600. I lost just a few pounds but I'm still glad I'm able to maintain and stop the scale from sky rocking! But the weight loss rate is at a Snail rate. I'm thinking my body may be getting use to my diet routine.

Anyways, I'm thinking about the shakes to help jump start the weightloss again??? What do your thoughts about it?

~Nancy

They might be a good change up for your diet. I can tell you I went from 235 lbs to 180 with just a shake plan. You may want to check with your doctor though depending on what kind of meds you are on. My pharmacist told me that I should prob give up my shakeolgy altogether but if I really wanted it to drink it 4 hours or more after I take my meds. Since I take my meds in the morning it kinda ruined my shake for breakfast...I really miss my morning shake.

I drink veggie protein shakes -- but they don't have enough calories to be a meal replacement. Still they are gluten, dairy and soy free - so they are safe for hypothroidism. Vega One is my favorite -- I get it at Whole Foods. they have bars too.

I think whatever works for you is what you should do.

Are you talking about shakeology by Teambeachbody. I was thinking about trying that one. Why do you have to take it 4 hours after your meds? What kind of meds are you on. Does the shake have calcium? Because thats the only thing i know you need to take 4 hours apart from synthriod and cytomel.

TECALLAHAN<---- Thats the one thing I was worried about is that the calorie intake is so low and may be unhealthy. Maybe I will try it as a short term diet. I don't want it to be all water weight and not permanent weight loss.

I take levothroid, as a general rule they say not to take a multivitamin within 4 hours ( I assume since you're supposed to avoid things like calcium, iron, fiber, etc..) which is pretty much what all meal replacement shakes are. I will say I love shakeology (the chocolate flavor) once I got use to it. My boyfriend drinks it to keep his weight down and I still have one for lunch or dessert every now and then. Don't feel you have to stick to one brand though. I drank Slimfast, Carnation, Kirkland, Special K, whatever I was able to afford at the time, they all work the same. Unfortunately my thyroid was really messed up by the time I got Shakeology so I never lost any weight with it. Shakeology is def one of the better ones, if you can afford it and your doctor okays it. You will get a little tired after awhile of your meal being liquid though.

are you guys all in US?

I'm in UK had underactive thyroid all my life and NEVER been told not to drink milk with my tabs as my mum used to mash them in weetabix when I was little to get me to take them!

I went low carb to boost weight loss and got some slim fast to try and stick to for 2 weeks as down to last few pounds and they are slow coming off. I was planning to just have a shake with a piece of fruit (as can have three 100cal snacks too) and salad or vegetables with fish or lean white meat. They haven't arrived yet, hoping they will come tomorrow so I can start wednesday!

I'm in the US, Concord, California to be exact.

From everything I've been told, looked up and read, calcium among a few other things can effect how my body absorbs my meds. That's not to say I never have milk I just try to be a good as I can so my meds can work their magic.
  • In the '80's I did the Cambridge Diet (and every diet that has come down the pike since really) and it wasn't for me.

Everyone has to find what works best for them. What works for me may not for you. I have hashi's and I feel much better eating clean and reducing as much as possible highly processed foods. Right now I am trying to figure out what the right mix of calories and exercise is to keep reducing at a rate of 1-2 pounds per week.

I'm in the US and I've always been told to take my meds without food. I can have water, and that's it for an hour afterward.

Anyway, I would be reluctant to try the meal replacement shakes. Don't do anything to lose weight that you aren't willing to do for the rest of your life, because the minute you stop using the shakes, the weight could jump back on you. Now, don't get me wrong. I do use protein shakes from time to time after a workout, but I would never replace real food with it. I see it as a supplement, not a replacement.

Personally, I am really grateful to lose just 2 pounds in a month. I know it's a slow process, but it's going in the right direction and I'm not doing anything that I can't maintain for life. The last thing I would want to do is not eat enough and screw up my metabolism even further. I need all the energy I can get!

Nspink, When I was your age I did every diet available at that time including good ole' diet pills. As a result (after gaining back the weight plus more time after time) I now have a really hard time getting the weight off and keeping it off.
My recommendation to you would be take it slow and stay away from quick fixes. Use the shakes after working out or as a treat or desert if you want but I really would hate to see you get the weight off too fast. You don't want to end up being older and still fighting the weight problem. It doesn't help when you have to deal with hypothyroidism too. Hang in there and you'll make it. :flowerforyou: :flowerforyou:

Thanks for sharing your experiences and suggestions on this topic.

Yes I've rather make sure that the weight I lose won't come back. The thing with me is that I do workout almost everyday. The only thing I really need to work on is choosing healthier options for my calorie intake. I follow my calorie count pretty well, its just they are probably 30% bad calories (When I crave for something sweet = my weakness). So, I was hoping that the meal replacement would control the type of good calories I need.

I'm going to talk to my endo on my next visit and see what she thinks. I'm also going to request labs on top of my thyroid levels: B12, Iron, Gluten sensitive to see where I'm at and what may interfere with my meds. '

Thanks again for all your support!!!

(total meal replacement) yes - been there done that, it does help you lose a lot of weight quick (which is unheard of with ppl with an u. thyroid, but be warned, once i started eating again i had more of a problem with food than i did before. i also lost a lot of hair on the diet (which they warn you about), but what they didn't mention, unlike most ppl without an under active thyroid is mine never grew back again.
i used a very low cal diet, would i recommend this - H*LL NO!
is it only temporary and the doctor's will warn you of this. again - i am only talking of the total meal replacement diets (v.l.c.d).

on a littler note, i'v just brought the book 'the thyroid diet' by mary j. shomon and would recommend this

at the end of the day, each to their own, as i'v been there i thought i would share an insight and hope this helps in some way, best of luck to you what ever route you follow :flowerforyou:

This is my second time using the GNC total lean replacement shakes and I have NEVER gained a single ounce back when stopping them. For me they help with the protein and fiber and usually the only way I can get a few lbs to start coming off. Everyone is different
