I am 2 weeks post op from my gastric bypass. I am thrilled to find this site and app as a way to log my food and exercise. I am looking for support and friendship of those who understand the challenges ahead. Today was a great day.

Welcome to the ever expanding (in a good way) group. Hope you are feeling well, and excited about this new journey. I am 6 weeks post op RNY(gastric bypass), and graduated back to normal food (previous-2 week liquid, 2 weeks mushy). Each day brings a new episode for me! So many different little things that catch my attention. Right now I'm struggling with 2 of my incisions that aren't healing. Last week it was the discovery that baby carrots are not welcome in my new stomach. My nutritionist told me that everyone's journey takes the same path with different experiences. That's whats so great about this site and especially this group.

Feel free to 'bounce' ideas, share comments and ask questions. There are some in the group who are more than 5 years out from RNY. They've 'been there-done that.'

Good luck on your journey. :flowerforyou:

Thanks for the encouragement Christine. No i know you are just 4 weeks ahead of me. I have someone to look up to. I hope your incisions heal quickly. I've been on the mushy route for about 5 days now. So far I am tolerating everything well. Baby Carrots seem like a long way off for me. So far scrambled eggs, deli ham, cheese and mushed up beans are my only adventures.

Do you mind if I ask, how much weight you have lost in the last 6 weeks?

If you watch the YouTube RNY surgical people, they are losing weight faster than me and that had me discouraged. I've lost 16lbs in 6 weeks. I was disappointed in that - especially when I expected more. I know the water weight from IV's stay about a week. I was on prednisone for 5 days when I came home from the hospital because I developed dermititis from an allergy to the steri strip glue that closed my incisions. And now I don't think I'm eating enough (ave 900 cals/day), cuz I've been at a weight loss plateau for about 10 days despite working and exercising 3-4 days a week.

My nutritionist said not to measure the calories - just get between 70-90g protein in each day- #1. Then get the fluid you need - at least 60 oz. Follow that with fiber, and everything else. I'm getting the protein, but I fall way short of the fluids. That is my struggle and that may be the culprit. Fluids are the fuel to everything working properly - it maybe the reason my 2 incisions are still weeping.

Suffice to say everyone is different and weight losses vary. I have to concentrate on MY food/fluid intake - maybe increase calories and definately increase fluid. Maybe that will help me jump off this plateau. You have to figure out what works for you.

    Again, good luck.

Thank you Traci, fr the welcome. I always need more friends.

Mfisher, good luck and congratulations on your upcoming surgery.

Christine - Thank you for the feedback. I would imagine a plateau at 6 weeks would be discouraging. I am on the soft food portion now. My surgeon has instructed me to eat as little as possible to fell satisfied until at least post 4 weeks. 0-3 times per day. I am only consuming 100-200 calories per day at this point. I am looking forward to a little more food, but honestly, I am not hungry after I eat. I am getting in 64-80 ounces of fluid each day. I just went back to the gym this week. today 15 minutes on the treadmill and 20 minutes on the bike. Now I am pooped.

BE CAREFUL OF THAT FEW CALORIES- you need protein! I'm sure you've have noticed that your hair is dropping extra strands - if you don't get enough protein, it will fall out in droves - you'll see it in the shower drain. The support group I go to once a month, a 3 year out RNY hairdresser said she finally had to cut her hair short short. She wasn't able to get all the protein she needed. The head nurse and the nutritionist at my Barriatric Center agrees - PROTEIN in - before anything else!!!!

Thanks for the head's up. The surgeon was VERY specific, that I eat only when hungry and tiny amounts of food for the first month. Specifically he told me, he doesn't care if I eat at all, so long as I get my fluids and take my vitamins. Just following Doctor's orders. I believe he wants to allow my pouch to heal and to let my body begin to learn hunger signals. The only foods I am eating at this point are mushy proteins.

Good, trust your MD. From all the posts I've read in our group - every MD seems to follow their own, but similar paths. You need to listen to him. Might wasnt to ask when you see him next about protein grams. My nutritionist asks for my MyFitnessPal password each time I see her. She wants to check on protein levels and calories and then review typical days.

Trusting in your MD is foremost. Good luck.
  • Congratulations on your surgery!! Didn't it seem like it took forever before you had it? I had my RNY last October. I agree with Christine about expecting a faster weight loss. Try not to compare yours (hard not to though) to others because there is always someone who is a savant and loses 200# in 6 months or something. Just take it a day at a time and be happy with how yours goes. I have hit 3 plateaus so far but survived them and am down 70# since surgery and 128# since last June when I started out on this!!

Listen to your doctor but you do need to eat. Christine is right about the protein. I have trouble getting enough in so I drink protein shakes almost every day. You will find what works for you by trial and error. Remember too, that your doctor probably hasn't had this surgery so his advice is academic, not necessarily relative to real life. I say that with due respect for his/her surgical skill. I would rely on the nutritionist's advice. But, mostly, I would pay attention to your own body and what your new pouch is telling you.

Take care and best of luck, Bonnie

Thanks Bonnie. Fabulous job on the loss to date. I appreciate the input. I wish I could scan my instructions and show you what was said. I know I didn't misunderstand, becasue I have seen him twice since surgery. Funny thing, my surgeon did not have this surgery, but the bariatrician in the office did. HE is the medical doctor in the practice. He also happens to be my brother.

I am certain once I get onto 'real' food, my hungry will pick up a bit and well my caloric intake.
