Quitting "cardio"

My husband has jumped on primal eating with me and it's been great. He's lost 12 pounds in about 2 months and he's doing awesome, but he WILL NOT give up his "i have to do endless hours of cardio or ill get fat again" philosophy. About 5 years ago he weight 310 pounds and got down to 185 (skin and bones, no muscle tone) by VERY restrictive calorie counting and running 6 days/week and lifting 3x/week.
He is back up to 225 now (wants to get down to 200) and loves primal eating but can't quit his cardio addiction. He spends HOURS at the gym on the treadmill/ ARC machine, and every day after work has to get his 40 min run in. Its really like a phobia for him.
He's seen the results I've had with the primal eating/exercise philosophy but just doesn't believe it will work for him because it's not how he lost all his weight to begin with.
How do I help my husband quit endless cardio?!?!?

challenge him to join you for a HEAVY lifting day? heavy days can be better with a partner - good couple time - built in spotter.
If he gets some solid resistance training as a substitute he might start to feel stronger and see the correlation?
For me I had to admit that countless hours of cardio really burns glucose best - and since I keep that low, I'm not trying to get rid of it.0 -
