    Similar story to mine. Did one very small, very local sprint race in 2010 after getting talked into it and so decided at the age of 40 to start 'doing triathlons'. Bought a bike (it helps!) early in 2011 and did my first proper event soon after. Came 7th overall in that one but there weren't any age-group placings.

    Then did another smallish event and came 3rd in Age-Group (40-44 - which as you say is VERY competitive).
    After this I did a couple more races in 2011 coming 2nd in Age-Group and 1st in Age-Group

    Then decided to step it up a gear and enter some ITU Age-Group World Champs qualifying events in 2012 (scary stuff)
    Did a small warm up event early in 2012, placing 3rd overall (no age-groupings), then straight into the British Championships where I placed 6th in my Age-Group and qualified for the World Championships (Age-Group of course!). Next was another qualifying event in which I got 1st in my Age-Group and 4th overall... All Sprint distance.

    Quite pleased with myself really! :)
