Training question...about Long runs

I am training for my first Half Marathon on May 6th, in Vancouver. The last week I didn't get to do my long run and this week may be a write off too... I still go for a 3-5 mile run 3 times a week minimum... Is this going to impact my ability to pick up where I left off on my last long run? I did 11 miles and was fine, just at 2 hrs even... Or should I suck it up this friday night after work and do my long run, even if I repeat 11 miles and then go for my 12 the next week?

I'm not sure what your overall plan is, but since you have about 8 weeks until the half and you've done 11 miles in 2 hours, I wouldn't think a week or two of missing long runs would be much of an issue. I've followed Hal Higdon's marathon training plan before and he calls for alternating weeks of long/medium runs. I would probably try to get in some miles on Friday, but if you can't do all 11 because of time constraints, it shouldn't be a problem.
If you weren't already able to do 11 miles, I might think differently, but with that being your long run already and the time before the race, you should be fine.
  • I have a 1/2 coming up in May as well. I've done a bunch and have tried several methods. I like to follow a long run Saturday with a shorter run Saturday. For example... 10, 8, 12, 8, 14, 10, 8, race day (13.1). Missing one long run won't hurt at all and it might even help! At this point in training, I always feel better coming back from an off week. It gives your soft tissues a little time to heal. Good luck!
