When it comes to a serious relationship what is most important as far as entering one or staying in one?
Is it love, the desire for companionship, intimacy physical and emotional?
Or is it more pragmatic issues such as security, economics, social pressures etc?

Desire for companionship is a big part of wanting to be in a relationship. I enjoy my life, but I don't want to be single forever.

Staying in a relationship is all about whether or not we make each other happy. I would rather be single forever than be with the wrong man just for the sake of not being alone. But sure, security, economics, physical and emotional intimacy, etc., all play a role in that. Love, a deep mental and emotional connection, good sex, financial security ... none of these things is enough by itself.

About mothers, fathers, and bonding ... of course there are exceptions, but I tend to agree that children are typically closer to their mothers. It has nothing to do with love or being a good parent. My dad is a very loving, devoted father, but there is no question that my brother, sister, and I are all closer to our mom. They've been married 35 years and made every major parental decision together, so divorce and lack of involvement are not at play. It just is what it is.

  • The #1 thing I want out a relationship is companionship, followed very closely by #2 which is hot sex. Seriously.

oooohhhhh I second this! I would think that sex is made hotter by having a great companionship to back it up. Need both please!
