Keep taking the Fish Oil capsules. If there was ever someone with cravings, it was me. It really has helped. You're doing great with your carbs. I started counting them today. I will wait a week before I get ketostix.

I had a good day yesterday without cravings but next week is when my problems start.

I have started taking 2 fish pills (2,000 mg total) in the morning and then, I'll take one (1,000 mg) more at lunch or supper. Now, I wait and see if I need to take another one during the day.

Don't know if you saw my post but I started entering the vitamins that I take on a daily basis. Check out my food diary. There were hidden fats and 1 hidden carb there.

I had a couple glasses of wine today to celebrate with a friend who came into some good fortune. But, I had some terrible food cravings. I thought of a chant that got me through it:

“Stay on the path, to lose the fat.” I repeated it constantly to myself.

My net carbs for today was 17. Now, the question is will the cravings come back tomorrow.

Today was fairly good. I had a little craving about 3 pm so I had a small protein drink. It gave me a boost which helped me get to supper.

My net carbs was 18 today.

I'm still in ketosis and doing good. I tested myself today with one cup of black coffee and didn't have any cravings or other side effects. But, I must not drink coffee everyday or I will have a problem.

I did really well till yesterday and we ate out. Pretty mu ch blew it. I have a question. Are you checking Carbs or net carbs? I am back with the program starting immediately. I'm sure that threw me out of ketosis but I will be back into it in no time. But how do you count carbs? Carbs? Net Carbs?

    Peggy,

I count net carbs and try to keep them below 20. But, net carbs are not a feature of mfp. Carbs minus fiber equal net carbs. So, I do count carbs, only so that I can subtract them from the fiber to get net carbs.

I am not certain if it matters which one I count. My carbs are normally below 30.

I knew how to get the net carbs. Perhaps I didn't word that question well. On my food diary, I track carbs and fiber. My question should have been, do you subtract the amount of fiber shown on your food diary from your carbs?
Today it shows that I had 16 carbs and 10 mg fiber. Am I supposed to subtract this particular fiber from my carbs to give me 6 grams of net carbs?

Yes, I subtract the amount of fiber shown on my food diary from my carbs. Then in the Food Notes area, I type in my net carbs.

    Yes, it's that particular fiber.

I spoke too soon about the coffee yesterday not having any side effects. I had a hard time going to sleep last night. It could have been the coffee.

Today was a good day without any cravings. I did a lot of yard work and wasn't starving for a big dinner. I knew I had work to be done today, so I had a big breakfast and reasonable lunch. At dinner, all I wanted was a protein drink.

I made Mexican Chicken for dinner and it was so good. Only 3 carbohydrates. I will definitely make that again.
As far as coffee, I have only one cup a day and that is the first thing in the morning and it doesn't seem to bother my system at all. Hubby and I enjoy our morning coffee together.

    Mexican Chicken

    Recipe By : Peggy Woodson
    Serving Size : 0 Preparation Time :0:00
    Categories :

Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method

2 Medium chicken breasts, no skin, no bone, R-T-C -- thawed
8 slices bell pepper -- sliced in rings
4 slices pepperoni -- The large slices
    8 tablespoons salsa
Salt, garlic powder, and pepper -- to taste
    1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Slice the chicken breasts in half as though butterflying but separate completely so that you have four pieces.
Pound each piece out pretty thin with a tenderizing hammer and placing each piece between saran wrap.

Place 2 bell pepper rings on each piece of chicken.

Spoon 2 tablespoons of salsa onto each piece of chicken.

cover with 1 slice of pepperoni.

Cover all with cheese. (I probably used less than a cup but not sure.

Place into foil lined pan and bake at 400 degrees for 15 to 20 minutes till done.

    Week 3 Day 1

I had a diet Mountain Dew for something different this evening, even though I know Atkins advises against aspartame.

After a little while and out of nowhere, I had some cravings. The only thing that I could think of that could have caused this was the aspartame. So, I poured the remainder of the soda down the drain.

If it was the soda or aspartame that caused the cravings, then this might be one of the ways I’m getting hooked by carb creep. When I start falling off the wagon, often I will have started drinking diet sodas again.

I think I mentioned above that I have this same problem with coffee, so I must have a problem with caffeine and aspartame in that both cause me cravings.

It’s surprising how I can read Atkins, but I don’t want to “really” believe what he says until I experience it first hand.

You are welcome. The original recipe was called pizza chicken and I changed it to Mexican Chicken by using salsa in stead of pizza sauce. It would have been great the other way too. I was supposed to use mozzarella in stead of cheddar but all I had was the cheddar.

Did I ever send you that low carb recipe site? If I haven't sent it to you do you want it?

I honestly believe that he really did know what he was talking about. So many people put him down for his diet plan and so did the AHA. After he died, they finally admitted he was right.

I read that the current research is proving that Atkins was right. Atkins admitted that he wasn't a researcher and that he was going by what he saw happened to his patients. I'm glad he stood up for what he believed.

Peggy, what's the name of the low carb recipe website that you like?

I found this on Pintrist. If you are not a member, you might want to join it. It's free and there are lots of low carb ideas on there as well as low calorie. There is so much there to look at. I do quilling and this site has oodles of quilling sites. So beautiful.

Here is the site I found on Pintrist. http://www.genaw.com/lowcarb/
Hope you like it. You can also go to pintrist and look around without joining. If you do decide to join, you create boards (I think of them as cork boards) where you can pin all these neat things and sites. If you see something you like click on it and it will usually take you to the original site. I'm on there under my own name.

I actually bought some “vegan” food last night, which I find amusing. Since I have a problem with dairy, I decided to buy “vegan” cheese and “vegan” cream cheese. I just hope that neither of them has any unwanted side effects. It will be nice to add a little cheese into my meals for a change.

I feel like I'm butting into a more personal conversation than an actual post, but I have some input for you on the diet soda thing- artificial sweetners trigger appetite:

"But how does something with no calories cause weight gain? Turns out that even if our taste buds can't tell the difference between real and fake sugar, our brains can. Another study, also presented at the American Diabetes Association meeting on Sunday, found that after three months of eating food laced with aspartame (which is also found in many diet soft drinks), mice had higher blood sugar levels than rodents who ate regular food. According to Fowler, who worked on all three studies and is now a researcher at UT Health Science Center at San Diego, the aspartame could trigger the appetite but do nothing to satisfy it. That could interfere with your body's ability to tell when you're full-and could lead you to eat more in general.

It happens in humans, too. A 2008 study found that women who drank water sweetened with sugar and water sweetened with Splenda couldn't taste a difference, but functional MRI scans showed that their brains' reward center responded to real sugar "more completely" than it did to the artificial sweetener.

"Your senses tell you there's something sweet that you're tasting, but your brain tells you, 'actually, it's not as much of a reward as I expected,'" Dr. Martin P. Paulus, a professor of psychiatry at the University of California San Diego and one of the authors of the study, told the Huffington Post. So you chase that no-calorie soda with something more caloric, like a salty snack. The sweet taste could also trigger your body to produce insulin, which blocks your ability to burn fat."

I figured this was a good explanation to your cravings, probably more so than the caffeine.

Or it could just be the caffeine, since diet mountain dew is loaded with it.

I seldom drink sodas. Just never was a big fan of them. Having said that, I must confess that I have always used sweeteners. I used to use Aspartame. Used it for years and decided I had to get off of it. I switched to the Splenda. I don't notice the cravings mentioned but I am also taking 4800 mg of fish oil with omega-3 on a daily basis at the suggestion of my physician. But your post makes me wonder if this isn't the reason I'm having such a hard time loosing weight. I've been dieting, strictly with no cheating, for 3 months and I've lost 6 lbs. I had begun to question whether I am insulin resistant or not.

Thanks for your posts and it is not an intrusion at all. Glad for the input. I'll have to look into this a little more.
