Yep, Dragon Age: Origins (+DLC), DA: II (+DLC), Diablo 3 is out soon (hesitant about that one though, seems like lots of dungeon crawling...there better be good loot!), for a little turn-based strategy, heroes of might and magic 6 is out, Mass Effect Series.
That should get you started0 -
Pink's line about being 'too school for cool' describes a lot of us im sure. It makes me giggle everytime my daughter plays it because it so takes me back to high school, i was TOTALLY too school for cool...straight A's ftw?0

I've been reminiscing this past month play Diable II in anticipation for Diablo 3.... Can't stop drooling over the new classes and character recreation0 -
Hmm, I really hope this isn't talking about me. I liked SyFy when it was SciFi, read and reread David Eddings' Belgariad series, along with any other fantasy I could get my hands on, and shunned the teen romance novels my friends read. I'm also a numbers geek. My profession is numbers. I will happily spend hours on a spreadsheet making it just right. Do I qualify?
Hot damn - someone else who loved Begariad series! I have a group of books I read at least once a year
The Belgariad series
LOTR (yes I start with the Hobbit)
Incarnations by Piers Anthony
The Rowan - Anne Mccaffrey
Ender's Game - why i'm drawing a blank on the author I have no idea!
Wow, I haven't seen anyone mention David Eddings or Piers Anthony since I was in high school! It's been quite a while but I read each book in the Belgariad, the Mallorean, and the Incarnations series at least 2-3 times. Bhelliom was my password of choice for a while. :-)0 -

yeah, like I said, I re-read those books over and over again - they are like old friends, I have to visit with them every once in a while - even though I am behind on Ender's Game series - I hear he released a couple more on Bean - I'm going to have to get caught up!
uh-oh, I don't think I read the Tarot series - damn, going to have to hit the used book store again, damn it!0 -
I have a simple test for any girl who shows up wearing a pair of Tina Fey glasses and claiming to be a geek. I throw the word "gorram" into a sentence and watch for recognition...

No, really, I was surprised how GOOD people think it is. Its pure concept and the concept is cute, but that's it. I wouldn't use it as a good test in fact, anyone who hangs with ANY geeks at all knows gorram just because of how freakishly popular it was. I actually think Dollhouse had the most potential of any whedon series from season 1. Sometimes it fell down a little and they had to rush through the ending but its probably the show my husband and I have agreed on most.
On the topic of geekery tests though, I think anyone who can pass a standard geekdom test is more likely to be a faker by the original article writers standards. Geekdom tests are too broad and too based in things that are mass popular, true geeks in their field know all the weird little minutia about the things they really like. Ask someone how many times they've watched the commentary and special features for their favorite shows - my husband ONLY watches Futurama with the commentary most of the time because he's seen the actual shows so many times he doesn't need to hear the dialogue to enjoy the show. My mom has watched every single special feature on the Lord of the Rings dvds, read every book and weird article on it, etc. That is how you identify "real" geeks.0 -

By that article's definition, yep. You are. So what? You can like anything you want to like and you can call yourself anything you want. Doesn't matter what anyone else thinks of how you define yourself, the only person who's opinion matters there is yours.0 -

Aw man, YES, I think about this so much! And this can apply to so many things; video gaming, music, T.V. shows, sports, books, skating, etc. It makes me sad when I see someone, say, wearing a Zelda shirt and then when I ask them their favorite game from the series they blank out and say "Idk lol, haven't played them." ;~; Makes me want to slap a beach. Also, sometimes people say internet memes and I get excited that they know them, but 99% of the time the person who used the meme doesn't know the origination of it...for example, a random girl comes up to me and (trying to be cute?) says "The cake is a lie!" I asked if she even played Portal and she got confused -______- Same with Skyrim's arrow to the knee meme...or "It's over nine thousaaaaaaaaand." Seriously, use it in a funny way at least, don't just say it whenever you see something Dragon Ball related/it's mentioned...****'s annoying. x.x0

haha -- totally. But hot topic makes good money on those - and the patches.
Also I am vaguely annoyed by the overuse of particular memes but actually since I don't have very many nerd-friends in real life it doesn't tend to come up. I think within my tiny circle we're still a bit overly enamored with "Nope, chuck testa"0 -

My son wears Misfits shirts, but he truly is a fan because his parents are fans. He has been listening to them from birth. And our shirts come from Interpunk, not Hot Topic.0 -

I personally think it is fine to buy things from hot topic because hot topic sells things you might want if you like certain ..things.....this is a terrible sentence. but um. Ahem. Its fine if your tastes lead you to purchase items in hot topic. The reason hot topic is a joke is because people let it inform their tastes which is silly. But I am in no way above buying a my little pony shirt there. I don't know where else to get them.0 -
I like the original poster remember when it was NOT cool. I was not popular in High School at all but not a qualified geek either. I guess what made me sad was we had one just like dude on Big Bang Theory...a walking brain! He was so smart. But they would tease him and some of us would try to protect him but he would say nothing at all. He ate by himself. I wished often teachers would try to help them and maybe they did but I didn't see it as a teen. A few of us tried to talk with him but I think he was so used to being isolated he didn't really respond at all. I think of him now and wish hope he came out okay.0

Oh, I have bought stuff there. It's just my son is a very snooty Skate punk (yeah an oxymoron, a snooty punk. LOL!). He doesn't like wearing the Hot Topic t-shirts because his words "kids buy the stuff to be cool and they don't know crap about the bands". And he's partially right. It's just like you said people do let it inform their tastes. But I think some people shop there because they carry some cool stuff, like you and I.0 -
It's also similar to the amount of girls that wear band t-shirts and you know they don't even know it's the name of a band let alone like the music. Saying that I wonder how I would be judged, but really you do just know with some girls it's their latest look.
I honestly think it's more of a fashion trend than anything. The overpriced stuff Hot Topic sells, the fact the everyone thinks it's cool to buy thick frame glasses. I know that most women I see who are true nerds don't always look the part.0 -

Pff. ha. Seriously - I don't really see any point in calling people out on it. Just enjoy what you enjoy and don't worry if other people TRULY enjoy those things or not. If they don't, then its their loss that they waste their time on it, not yours.0 -

Hey, some people pull them off! I'm talking about this 'style' fad.

Personally, I feel like I've been robbed.
I remember when Doctor Who was something exactly THREE kids (and I was one of them) in school knew about. Now it crops up in mainline television when the Leverage characters use Tom Baker and Sarah Jones as aliases.
I remember when being a Trekkie made me a supreme outcast. Now people I meet decide if they want to be my friend or not based on who my favorite captain is.
I remember when no one had heard of Roger Corman or Vincent Price. When people looked at my friend Pam and I like we were aliens from another planet for spewing dialog from House of Usher in the halls at school. Now John Cusak is doing The Raven and when I saw the first trailer for it, the whole theater whoop-whooped.
I remember when horror films about hauntings and demons were rare. Now mainstream actors don't feel they are real actors until they've done one or the other.
I remember when my love of super heros was right up there with being a Trekkie. Now my attorney boss has asked if she can go see The Avengers with me. Whaaa??!!
I remember when my love obscure Brit programs like Red Dwarf, Black Adder, Mr. Bean and Faulty Towers was only appreciated by visiting Brits. Now an actor from a Doctor Who spin-off lands a roll on a popular tv show? Ok, it helps that he's exceedingly charming. But they used to be obscure British actors...
All these things are trendy?
