Motivation to exercise

I'm impressed by the amount of exercise I see so many people getting. I am sooooo not motivated to exercise. I'm on my feet teaching a good part of the day. I sit for short periods but I tend to bebop around the classroom rather than staying in one place. We do a lot of music and movement activities as well. So, I'm not what would be considered sedentary. After teaching little guys all day, I'm just so exhausted. I have to force myself to exercise. Fortunately, I have been losing weight in spite of not exercising enough.

So, my question is, what motivates you to exercise?

  • For some weird reason it makes me feel better! Honestly, I came home today after my students were crazy (spring fever!) and I almost talked myself out of it because I was tired... but I said.. I'll just go for 30 min.. and I did.. and I felt so much better!

I inherited a recumbent stationery bike from Grandad about a year ago and found that I loved riding while reading my Kindle. So, 4-5 nights per week, I ride as far and as fast as I can for about 35-40 minutes and read as much as I can during that time. I love it and I love the way I feel when I'm finished. I have been losing weight VERY slowly, but my body has changed a lot and I think it's because of the bike. :-)
  • I feel the same way. I'm so tired from being on my feet all day and dealing with students that I normally don't feel like it at night! I've been walking my dog, but other than that, I haven't been exercising at all. I also have pretty severe back issues, so I totally understand. Last year I dropped 20 pounds without exercising at all, so I'm hoping my body will keep responding to healthy eating habits until I feel well enough to add exercise!

Good morning! I'm not one who thrives on exercise (as many on the other main forums seem to feel is the only *right* way to lose weight...) I say, I'm not looking to be a pin-up poster girl, just want to look and feel good in my skin - and for me, that is losing the weight, and toning as I go. For me, that means finding activities that I love (would do even if no health/fitness benefit) and that includes ping-pong! I take long walks when it is dry out, I taking puppy for runs...I can do many laps around our mall (for the record, it is .55 of a mile - one lap!) I do lift light weights and do ab crunches...but no one will ever call me "buff"! I've had two c-sections and have pizza dough-looking skin that hangs over some pretty bad scar tissue... Not thrilled with it - but less enthralled with the idea of undergoing the knife, knowing the risks involved. Hubby is sweet - and insists that when he sees it, he knows that represents our children (which for record, are pretty awesome young adults!) No bias, however...

I hit goal weight today...120lbs, which is what I was when I got married almost 26 years ago. It's funny and weird all at the same time...I KNOW I am much thinner than I was, my clothes that I was hoping to get back into (my skinny clothes) are now too big, and when I see pictures/videos of me, I look good. When I look at myself naked...I don't see the weight loss. Not sure what the moral of the story is here (or if there is one?!) but I suspect it might be along the lines of "keep my clothes on and everyone will be happier?!!"

My advice would be to do what works for you. Whether that be exercising a lot or a little. Don't feel guilty if you have a small amount of time to either exercise or nap - and you choose the nap. We've ALL done it - and quite frankly, if you're that tired, you NEED it! Our jobs are highly stressful at times...you need to do what works best for you to help you get through it. I love that we have this teacher forum (thanks, Summer!) because we do face some unique situations, and I believe that we can be supportive because we've all found ourselves in similar situations - and we just have to make the choices that seem best for our well-being.

Congratulations on reaching your goal! I've been trying to get more exercise but this last week has been awful, so I've just been putting on some music and having a good old dance for 10 minutes when I get in from work - always with the curtains closed though, don't want the neighbours thinking I've completely lost the plot!

I may not be going to the gym and doing any formal exercise beyond walking and Wii Just Dance 2 & 3, but I am making a point of increasing my daily activity.

I am parking my car in the farthest parking space in my school's parking lot. I'm taking stairs more often and doing more walking during the school day. I'm increasing the gross motor activity in my student's day, and I'm joining them in those gross motor activities.

I've just lost 2 more pounds in spite of the recent holiday (yes, I indulged).

What I'm doing seems to be working.

Do it in the morning, before you have that busy day and find reasons not to do it, that's what I do.

You know what? I used to do that. My biggest issue is getting up earlier. I already get up at 5:45am, and it would be so hard to get up earlier. However, in the summer, that won't be a problem.

Your idea really is excellent if I could get up earlier. I remember feeling soooo energized going to school. It also gave me a better attitude.

    I will work on it!
  • I work out to be able to eat something that I want like chocolate, cheese, peanut butter, etc. A friend of mine lost 70 pounds and that is her motto... work out to eat!

That is such a smart idea. I need to adopt that philosophy.
