So yesterday and today were both 5K runs on my training schedule. I didn't know if my hubby (slow runner) would be running with me today, so I ran "fast" yesterday, to see how quickly I could complete a 5K race. I was running as fast (cadence) as I could. My intervals were cadence of 88-97, and pace from 6:18 to 7:18 min/km. I was aiming for 6:30, trying to keep all intervals below 7:00. I only managed to get two intervals 6:30 or under.
So, since I did my fast run yesterday, I did a slow run today. Hubby wasn't with me, so I could run whatever pace I wanted to. I decided to take a leisurely pace, and concentrated on lengthening my stride. My cadence was 78-83, and pace from 5:58 to 6:40! Only one interval was over 6:30! I ran 5K a minute and a half faster today than yesterday.
Obviously when I increase my cadence I greatly reduce my stride length. I'm going to have to work on that!
Now I see why (in part) my 6' friend runs so much faster than I do!
