It takes a commitment on your part to do it. You have to make up your mind that you are ready to tackle the issue and then go after it like it is the lottery. I have counted carbs on and off for years. If you will leave out anything that is white, (bread, pasta, rice, flour, sugar, any vegetables with the starchy white inside like corn, peas and beans.) it makes it a whole lot easier. The good news is that you can have fried bacon and eggs for breakfast. Yes eggs are white but they are protein.

A book I read long long ago said that if you eat less than 60 grams of carbs a day you would lose weight. Atkins starts you out much stricter. The Atkins induction phase includes 20 grams of carbs a day. Those are net grams. The easy to figure the net grams is this. Carbohydrates - Fiber = Net Carbohydrates. The fiber does not digest like other nutrients and for the most part goes on through your system so you subtract them.

I will be happy to help you or to support you in your efforts. You are welcome to send me a friend request.

also, buy the atkins book, seriously, it is motivating and you will see results in a few days (water mostly) but you will feel different. Day 6 here and doing really well. by day 4 things will change for you. buy the book its fantastic with great recipes too. You also need to consume more fat. Its not good enough to just cut out bread and fruit. Add me as a friend if you want since we are both on the journey at its early stage :)

Everyone gave good ideas. Here are a couple links that I've found helpful, and would suggest to anyone low-carbing - it's from Dr. Mike, author of Protein Power:

    shar140--thanks for the links.
To the OP--you have to read and get good information about how you want to low-carb first. You can't just say--oh I'll cut carbs without knowing what to do. Since I have tried Atkins, I went to the official Atkins.com for a how-to map for Phase 1, even though I had tried it before. You can also go to the library and get books. I hope people doing other low-carb plans will chime in on how they figured out what to do.
Then after gathering information you MUST clean out your kitchen and PLAN your meals and snacks. Since you have tried and fallen off the wagon this is important for you. Again there are websites and books to help--or go to the sticky here and see what people are eating.
In the beginning it takes a bit of mental effort and knowledge as well as just the doing it.
Maybe your personal plan is to just cut out white processed food like white bread, pasta sugar etc. If this was easy nobody would be overweight.
    Good luck and keep posting.

Check out this forum too, there are people there who have been low carbing for decades! It's loaded with tips, ideas, recipes and info about anything/everything low carb. http://www.lowcarbfriends.com/

I fell off the wagon a few years ago and struggled with getting back. At that time I read The 7-Day Low-Carb Rescue and Recovery Plan: For Every Low-Carb Dieter--On Any Program--Who Needs Real Help--Right Now written by Rachael and Richard Heller. It really helped me ease back into the low carb WOE gently and with fewer bumps.

The more you understand about low carbing, the better prepared you will be to push through those first days. I still occassionally crave the sugar - I believe I am a true sugar addict - and rereading what I already know gets me past those cravings.

Good luck! It's just like quitting anything, you have to make up your mind to do it, and then you simply (hah!) have to do it!

You need to plan plan plan!!

My tip- I browse low carb websites or develop low carb versions of all my favourite meals and then plan my week's meals & snacks. Then only buy the groceries you need for those meals.

You need to get creative in the kitchen otherwise you'll get bored/frustrated and binge/fall off the wagon.

I agree with the others, do your research first and buy some LC books to find out wihich plan is best for you.

Thanks for that info. Is it okay to be over on fiber every day?

    Quoted for truth!

Go find and read the Atkins book. You won't be successful unless you know the science behind what you are trying to do. Once you understand the science, the motivation will be SIMPLE.
