used to run - can I sign up for a 5k in July/Aug/Sept?

Hi - I used to run for fitness before I had two kids over the last 3 years. Now that the littlest is 1.5, I want to try again.

I think I'm starting from scratch, except for knowing what to expect a little bit, so I think C25K is right for me. But, I'd like to motivate myself by signing up for a race. Some of the articles say to wait till you've been running 6 months.

My question is, can I sign up for a race 3-4 months away, if I'm only planning to run it to complete it? Any advice?

Thanks!

Sign up !! yes yes yes it will give you a goal, i could not find a 5k in my area so have committed to a 10k and up until recently i had never run since high school and then only half a rugby pitch at a time

My run is on June 17th and have completed the C25K and gone a bit further by now but yes sign up you will do it just follow the advice for c25k and dont go to fast

good link for c25k is the NHS web site google NHS c25k

I agree! Do it! As long as its a couple months out and you stick with your training it will be great motivation.

Okay, I did my first run yesterday, and I signed up for a 5K today. I hope I can do it!

You can absolutely do a race right after finishing the C25k! You probably won't be the fastest person there, but I don't see any reason to wait 6 months after you start running.

I did my first race about 3 weeks after finishing C25k and I was pleased with my time and had fun. Plus, having a race on the calendar helps for motivation too!
