First Impressions NROL4L

Well I got my New Rules of Lifting for Life last night. I was so looking forward to this book, i ripped open the box from Amazon and was reading while I was getting changed.

I had used the original NROL for my workouts as I have lost 75lbs, and had finished that program a couple of months ago. I have been kind of wandering the desert of on-line workouts and NROL phases since then. So when I read this book was coming out I preordered it instantly.

I started reading and I got scared, it was all about middle life... I am not 33, even if I party hard that is hardly going to be the middle of my life! He is talking about being a baby boomer and aging... and i was getting more and more nervous. Don't get me wrong Lou Schuler has a great writing style, informative yet casual and it is a breeze to read, but I did not feel like this was the book for me...

THEN I got to the workouts! They look amazing! I did not read NROLFW.... sorry maybe it is a macho thing, I know that book is loaded with killer workout but I just could not look myself in the mirror and do the Womans workout. This time they used Alwyn refers to as the Chinese Menu approach for the workouts.

So each workout is broken into phases. Each phase focuses on a specific type of exercise, like Core or Strength. The book comes with several options for each phase. Those options are grouped 1-5 from beginner to advanced. So you tailor each workout to yourself. Which I think is great for me now. I loved the structure offered by the original NROL, but I did learn a lot about myself then, which will help me to build an even greater workout now!

In typical Alwyn fashion he includes exercises that are impractical in the gym, like a side lunge while you use a lower level pully to do a row. I don't know about your gym, but mine, the cable machines are a very busy area, not exactly a great place to lay down!

I am going to sit down today and start formulating my first rounds of workouts today, and give it my first attempt this Saturday!

Workout logs are coming soon to the NROL website http://www.thenewrulesoflifting.com/nrol-for-life
Werkit already has their logs available, but you do need to own the book to access them. http://werkit.com/programs/nrol4life

    Hello,

I am only in the break in period of the NROL. This program goes for a year, but I think it is more sustainable than a P90X.

The Original NROL is an amazing book and set of workouts. I loved it and had great success in the year I followed it

I am almost finished reading it! I plan on doing it after I am done Body Revolution. It seems to be along the same lines as the New Rules of Lifting for Abs, which I would also love to get around to doing! *lol*

You know I'm a big advocate for NROL, having just finished NROLFW. In the late summer or early fall, I plan on starting work on the ab book. Good to hear your thoughts on the new book. It'll be good to know what you think as you start the workouts.

I'm a big fan of the NROL books and of Alwyn and Lou. I started in 2006 with the original NROL, did all the break in, fatloss and hypertrophy workouts. As soon as NROL4W came out, I did that one. The beginning of the year I nearly finished NROL4Abs and right now I'm revisiting the original fatloss workouts at the moment...just restarted Fatloss III. I downloaded my Nook app copy of the latest book and am nearly done reading. Now, I am 50 so...this book is for me and my friends, so I'm very excited. And I'll read anything Lou writes because I love his style.

This is my first time going with an e-version of a workout book. I have all of the werkit.com logs for the other books...I wonder if I'm going to run into trouble proving I own the book since pagination is likely to be different from the physical book. I guess I should go find out now.

    Got 'em! That was easy.

I am not a huge fan of this Werkit Log sheet... part of me is thinking about making my own version in excel so I can have it printed. The website for NROL4L says it will have downloadable workout logs, so I will wait to see what they are like first

Yeah, in the past I have made my own logs in Excel as well and would record everything on one sheet. It really is better that way, but at some point I got lazy and started using their logs. They are pretty any way, but having every workout on a separate page is harder to keep track of. I haven't been doing such a hot job of logging since the gym manager threatened to revoke my membership for recording on behalf of friends. To him that was akin to training them. Yep, he's a moron.

I just ordered this book today. I know I won't start the problem any time soon, I just want to read the book lol. I am currently doing ChaLean Extreme then will either start this or New Rules of Lifting for Women(I have done some of it but I'm a slacker when it comes to following programs) eventually. It will be nice to be part of this group and follow everyone as they go along...

The difference with this book is you build your own workout, so you determine how challenging it is each step of he way. And if you add something and hate it, you can replace it and nobody is going to tell you You're not doing the program!"

Ooohh I like that! I think my husband will like it too cuz he hasn't found a program he completely likes and just does his own thing, maybe this will be a better guide for that.

It is a great workout. gives you a lot of flexibility but keeps you within a type of exercise for each part. They describe it as a Chinese Menu approach, where you select something from each category.
