I am using it to cook with and I do melt it and add it to my morning protein drink. I tried it on toast but, it did upset my stomach.0

Hi Moejo3,
Yes, it does upset the stomach if added too quickly. I mix it with my protein powder, that is then mixed into my oatmeal, at breakfast. Same for my afternoon snack, & mix it into oatbran. At lunch I put it on my tortilla & warmed up meat, but it has taken me time to be able to use a whole TBS. on that. Today I did it, but had that feeling in my throat a bit, but not too bad.
So, today I did my recommended amount... :drinker:0 -
Hi All,
After reading the comments regarding the coconut oil, (which I am going to try again) I was just wondering if anyone here remembers when Safflower Oil was touted as highly as the coconut oil is now. I, being of the older generation, remember taking Safflower Oil capsules to help me lose weight after my second son was born, and they did work. If I remember right you were supposed to eat primarily protein, salads and vegetables. So, was it actually the Safflower Oil or the elimination of the carbs from my diet the reason the weight came off???. I have to say that my skin and hair were better when I took the oil. But, as with all things that we tend to do I stopped the capsules after losing the weight. I still used Safflower Oil for cooking until something else came out that was considered better.
I truly hope that Coconut Oil is all they say it is. I use it on my skin and I love it. So I will try the capsules again as something else was going on with my system that may have contributed to my feeling sick from taking them before.
I wish us all the best in figuring out what works and what doesn't for each of us as we journey on with Hypothyroidism.:drinker:
Healthy eating to us all,
Ginny :flowerforyou:0 -

Hi Ginny,
That's interesting! LOL... I used to be a diet center counselor/owner... one of the things I learned there was: you need good oil in your diet to lose weight. I do believe we used safflower oil too. It was usually added to our salad, but only 2 tsp. @ day. I don't know why I stopped doing it... probably because I've gone low-carb & NO fat... and in the back of my mind I have been thinking... you should have some oil... but ignored it.
This coconut oil thing is going WAY over the recommended 2 tsp., which makes me nervous, (and the fact that it is hard does too); but because its touted to help regulate our thyroid hormones does make me want to give it a good try.
I think I will cut back to 1 TBS. after I lose the 6 lbs. But am hoping it will help with that last bit of wt. Will also be getting my cholesterol checked regularly!! As also the thyroid stuff.
Best thing you can do though, add it to stuff, so that you don't have to taste it & that its not greasy!0 -
thanks for the info ladies. I bought a jar, but wasn't sure how to incorporate it into my diet. Mine turns liquid when it gets over 70 degrees out, so that was funny.
I think I will just try cooking with it instead of using safflower or grapeseed oil, but I don't normally use cooking oil everyday, so I hope this helps. It was kindof expensive for the jar.

Debby, As I have a hard time with the taste of oil that is why I am going to try the capsules. It is recommended on the bottle that you take 4 caps. per day, however I am only going to start out with one cap a day. It took me a long time to get used to Olive Oil but I don't have too much trouble with it now. I also take Omega 3's each day and so I'm getting oil in my diet.
Mary, Frying with the coconut oil just doesn't appeal to me. I feel as if I'm using Crisco or Lard even though I'm not. So, that's why the capsules. Plus they are not as expensive. The jar of coconut oil I purchased I use on my skin. Have to admit, I really like it for that. At first I thought, oh, this is going to be greasy, but it soaks into my VERY DRY skin quickly so no problem.
So, ladies, have a great day. Stay with it. We'll all get there. One way or another.

Thanks, my salt intake is extremely low, so if anyone is low in iodine, its me I am always under 30% of my daily requirement for salt. I will definitely keep watch to see if it makes things worse. Going very gradually into a small dose.
I fried my tortilla in the coconut oil... yuk. I had a burning throat from the grease. I'll have to figure out a way to have it. If you melt it down & mix it with nonfat salad dressing, will it stay mixed? Or go back to hard again? I'm just not used to eating any fat, except a bit of peanut butter now & then.
I also bought some Quinoa also, but it looks pretty hard to use. Have to rinse it? Do you do that in a sieve? I was hoping to just add water & protein powder to eat with my oats (that I eat raw). Was that supposed to be good for Thyroid too?
Sorry, I ask so many questions!
On a positive note, my husband just hooked up my central vac system & it works like a dream! :flowerforyou:
I like to make a Mediterranean Qunioa salad with cucumbers, kalamata olives and cherry tomatoes and then toss it with a EVOO and Balsamic lemon mixture. I just keep it in the fridge and eat it for lunch or dinner. Also, check out all recipes.com for more information.0 -
Thanks Moejo,
I actually forgot that I asked about Quinioa
At this point I don't know how to add it to my diet. Is it a carb? My calories are up with all the coconut oil, so I will have to do some serious juggling to add anything.
Yes, it certainly is expensive. I bought a bigger jar today, decided to keep going with it.0
