We know that weight-bearing, high-impact exercise is good for your bones. For kids, it actually builds your bones; but for adults, it just slows the inexorable decline in bone strength and size that starts in your 20s.
At least, that's the conventional picture. But a new study from the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, published in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research (press release here) offers evidence that it's not too late to build bone even in early adulthood. The study was straightforward: they took detailed measurements of bone characteristics in 833 19-year-old men, along with recording how much physical activity of different types they did. Then, five years later, they measured the bones and the physical activity levels again. Here's an example of what they found:...
