She asked if yoga was a practice of prayer to false gods and she got the history of yoga. We also explained that some "yoga" that is done now isn't the same as that religious practice. So, is yoga "bad" for Catholics? Answer: depends in how you're defining yoga and how it's being done.

I'm not familiar with PX90. After reading our discussion, she can determine for herself if she's comfortable with it.

@jrossmrv a bit. But since my first post, I've come to understand a bit more on my own research. I happen to work with a lady that practices yoga each morning in worship of her gods. she is Hindi, she explained to me that for the most part the yoga taught at say an athletic club or yoga studio or even a video like P90x is not necessarily the same as the yoga/meditation/prayer she uses each day.

i have tried the P90x as well as yoga at a studio. it was a series of breathing, postures and stretches. They call it yoga because some of the movements modified or derived from an actual pose that is used in traditional yoga.

    Jesus is Lord.

So, I'm wondering, why it is sometimes OK to take practices from other religions, give them Christian meanings, and keep them...yet not OK to take helpful breathing and stretching exercises from another religion, drop the religious part of it, and maybe even do Christian meditations along with it?

great topic... and great point- one I have fretted over for years!
I waiver because, well- as a gymnastics/ fitness coach I know the importance and benefits of regular stretching; as a massage therapist I know how entwined religion & health are in other cultures (AMericans are so missing the beat here!); as a Christian I know how badly satan wants to deceive us; and as a health seeker I like to go to group exercise classes and my area only offers yoga for flexibility training.

so what's a gal to do? mostly, I just- sadly- avoid yoga classes just in case, and try to add more flexibility training into my daily routine and into the fitness classes i teach...
