What's your favorite setting for horror movies?

For me I preffer more of wide open settings like abandoned cities or cities in chaos just cause that gives so many different options for the scenes. Hospitals and Asylums are probably number 2 on the list followed by the woods, graveyards/morgues, houses and warehouses/factories.

My favorite kind of setting is in an enclosed area. Like a house or hospital, or so on. The kinds of movies that keep everything enclosed and claustrophobic. After that, I like scary movies that happen during the day time in the film. Scary stuff that happens during the day is usually scarier for me. (For example: While Insideous was creepy at first then turned into something silly and not interesting, part of the reason why it was scary was that the scary stuff was happening at 2:00pm! The sun was out and they still managed to create a creepy atmosphere by keeping the shades down or something)
In the end I think it just depends on the kind of horrorific subject that we're in. Weather it be ghost, creature, slasher, or whatev. The setting of enclosed complexes or caves is always freaky.0 -

Just might check that movie out, when I saw the descent I really didn't know what I was in for. I really enjoyed the claustrophobia and stress but when they added monsters and stuff I didn't like it as much.0 -
I like abandoned cities. We watched a recent film that started in Moscow and it was obliterated by these aliens that were able to cloak themselves.

You wil like that movie. There are no monsters. It's more of a "everyone stay together to try and get out of here" kind of thing. A group of people so you know how that is.0 -

exactly it's more suspense/drama than horror, it's a good flick though, it rocked in 3D0 -

GAAH I wanted to see it in 3D SO bad. If I were to dabble in buisness, I would have designed a 4D theatre that plays select movies syncronized with light and strobe effects and hydrolic seats. That movie would be one of them, and it would include dark hued lights an intense surround sound where special sound effects came from speakers and sub-woofers below the seats and behind the head-rest. The seats would rock and sway or bob up and down as if it was floating in water. Lots of water effects and during the film it would be quite cold at first, but as the film progressed and the caves got more closing, I would shut off airflow and let the air in the auditorium get stagnet and stuffy.0 -

that would be awesome! lol We used to have a place here that had a 3D theater where the seats would move it was fun as hell0 -

I remember at this peir in San Fransisco they had a 4D theatre. It was cheesey computer animation/live action and a loosley written story about "Himmalamazon" (a forest that had the flora and fauna of the Himalayian mountains and the Amazon) and you went through a logging facility or something. Anyway, I lost my *kitten* when a buzz saw "cut" the log in front of us and two huge jets of fog flew out towards the audience from the screen. The rocking and rolling was so fun though. So imagine one of those theatres, only on a larger scale, like something from Disneyland or Universal Studios. Programmers can syncronize effects to select movies, and maybe if it kicks off, then the director will create a film with a pre programmed sequence to follow.0 -

lol that sounds cheesy yet awesome, and ya it would be awesome if they did that, it would definitly up the excitement but also would up the ticket price which would suck considering you have to take out a small loan to goto a movie as is haha nice thing here is we have a drive in that is pretty cheap, they show 2 movies and it's 7 bucks for adults and 1$ for kids 4-12 or something like that so I take my kids there all summer haha0 -

Only last summer I expeirenced the beauty of the drive-in. My lady and I piled a bunch of pillows and blankets on the bed of my pick-up and loaded a whole bunch of snacks and a hand held radio with us. This drive-in used the car radio to give you the audio. It was amazing. We watched Hangover 2 and Bridesmaids and it was only $14 for both of us. It was ten times more fun than going to the theatres for that. But I dont think that kind of expeirence would work great with every kind of movie. I think drive-ins are best for comedies and maybe horror movies. MAAAYBE a sad kind of movie. Action and other kidns of horror movies I think are best with surround sound. Like I wouldnt watch Paranormal Activity in the drive-in. You would miss important noises. But i would watch Cabin in the Woods in the drive-in because its that kind of scary movie0 -

Ya I actually watched The Avengers there this last saturday and it was okay there I enjoyed it, pretty awesome movie, ya I dont recommend seeing any movies that are really dark cause you can't see the screen as well when its a really dark setting, so Paranormal Activity and probably even Chernobyl Diaries wouldnt be good there. Most action movies are pretty good there if you use a larger radio or your car radio you dont notice much of a difference.0 -

This isn't an exact setting like a building but I love my old British horror films that are set in England when it was a lot more rural, I love the areas and houses they are set in but when you look up the area it was filmed it is now part of London. I just like the idea of old England compared to how it is now.
But for proper settings;
1. Hospitals/Asylums
2. Abandoned buildings
3. On the road, passing through a backwards town.0 -
