1200 calories and over 300?!?!?!?

So i went to my OBGYN today and i mentioned that i was losing weight. He goes "So your eating 1200 calories a day???" i said "No i'm at 2500 calories a day"

I was sitting there thinking WTF!?!?!?!?!??!!? i'm over 300 lbs how am i suppose to eat only 1200 calories a day and not go into starvation mode??? As a doctor dont you think he would realize that. Now i know hes not my normal doctor but still. All doctors have to go to med school!!!!!!

Anyone else think its strange he said i should only be eating 1200 calories at over 300 lbs??? and how many calories do you eat? and if you are only eating 1200 calories how do u manage? and not go crazy or go into starvation mode?

Sorry my rant for the day :-D

ugh! my mom who claims all about how she took nutrition etc, and is a know-it-all went on and on about how I should eat 1200 calories only...

When I told her flat out that her 1980's nutrition information is totally out of date and that the nutritionist I was speaking to had doubled that for me she went on and on for two days about how I was never going to lose any weight if I ate that much.

She was even talking that I should go as low as 800 calories... I was all "are you friggin' nuts?'...

For someone over 300 pounds a 1,200 calorie diet is not unreasonable especially if there are pressing health issues like being diabetic or needing surgery. A 1,200 calorie diet might be harder to stick with and less satisfying, but you would still lose weight quicker than eating 2,500. Doctors put patients on even lower calorie diets when needed.

I am 5'4' and weigh 324. MFP has my calories at 1650. I average 1,380.

This is your journey and you can choose the best path for you.

I wouldnt let you it bother you. Unless they are a diatician or a nutritionist they take 1 nutrition class in med school. If 2500 is working for you stick with it!

I tried many different calorie ranges before i finally decided to go with MFP's numbers. And guess what? It works!

MFP currently gives me 1790 calories, if Im hungry Ill eat some of the exercise calories, I just try to stay under or close to 2000 on those days.

My friend had to have heart surgery and was eating 1200 for about two months before surgery, but she was under strict medical supervision. I can't imagine eating 1200 all day. I burn about 2900-3100 calories a day according to my BFM. I usually eat around 2100-2200 a day.
