Grrr...Everything has added sugar!

I bought some gazpacho soup from Waitrose (UK upscale supermarket) for lunch. I love gazpacho - spent a summer in Spain and ate it every day, nearly. I know that it can be made with bread crumbs, so I was super happy to see that the "Heston" range had no bread! Yay! Veggies without a salad for lunch today!

Well....I took my first bite, and at first, it was tasty. Then the sweetness hit me. Ick! I figured, well, I'm more sensitive to sweet tastes because I'm eating no added sugar and low carb. Then I took a few more bites and it was so sweet I couldn't finish it. I reread the label...took a closer look. There it was - SUGAR added near the bottom of the ingredients. Otherwise it would have been a very nice product. Disgusting. I've made gazpacho many times and there is NO reason to add sugar. And this was SO sweet. Serves me right for not simply making it myself in the first place - which I will now have to do because I'm craving gazpacho!

Yet another product with added sugar where it is absolutely NOT needed. This is why I'm trying to make everything from scratch, but sometimes it is so EASY and tempting. Until you read the 20-line ingredient list. *sigh*

Yup! If it goes on the shelf or in some cases, refrigeration.. its either salt, sugar, alternative salts/sugars, or worse, preservative-chemicals to sustain the product...

Talk about ruining a good food porn session huh?

I used to be addicted to sauces (hot chilli, sweet chilli, tomato, bbq, you name it), it wasn't until after I started looking at the sugar content that I realised how much I was consuming per day. I also bought 'low fat' products which are invariably packed with the stuff.

For example, I'd have some of those nasty rice cracker things with some sauce as a snack (because I was hungry all the time, as you are on low fat). Talk about a nutritional disaster area.

Now I either use tabasco, cayenne pepper or dried chillis to spice things up and it's just as good.

My grocery shop does not consist of a lot of time in the 'interior' of the supermarket and this is a Good Thing.
