Color me confused...No sugar....

I am posting this here rather than the main boards because I don't want to read 101 posts about how sugar isn't bad for you and you should just eat in moderation...
An co-worker of mine (not really a friend) was commenting on how much weight I have lost and asked me what i was doing - I didn't use the word Paleo but simply said I cut out things like breads and pastas and really watch my carbs and sugars and do a lot of strength training workouts.
So she proceeded to tell me "Oh I am doing Sugar busters which is just like that" - then she said she hasn't seen much difference doing it for a month...so I ask her what a typical day of food is like for her - well it turns out she is eating anywhere from 3-4 servings of fruit a day, as well as, a small amount of honey with her tea....I say well that might be your issue too much sugar and as a result higher carbs...and she tells me no that the fruits she is eating are OK so therefore it must be something else as she has removed all the sugar from her diet...
I attempted to explain fruit still had sugar in it and her body was still going to react to the sugar and that the main difference is by eating fruit you get some extra vitamins and minerals your body needs...I told her fruit isn't bad but she may want to revaluate how much she has and stick with 1-2 servings of higher sugar fruit/veggies a day (as she said she devours baby carots - whcih I know is one of the higher sugar veggies I eat a lot of) and add in more lower sugar veggies and fats - she didn't want to hear it...and told me I was wrong because she HAD removed the sugar - at this point I wanted to bang my head against a wall - I realized no matter what i said she wasn't going to listen to me - so I said "well good luck" and walked away
I hadn't really looked into the No sugar things out there - websites, books, etc... - I assumed fruit was pretty much off the list - thinking it was more along the lines of really no or little sugar...(which I am not giving up my fruit so I never took a look at it) - so i googled a bit...to me the whole thing is very misleading...because you can have sugar - LOTS of sugar....
I guess it is helpful for those who are getting themselves off of processed foods and junk stuff to a more whole and clean way of eating...but....to me it is VERY misleading...

Any way it's sliced, sugar on MFP whether it comes from fruit, honey or white table sugar is counted the same way. In any of the Paleo/Primal books I've read, sugar is eliminated in it's entirety and specifically fruit should be limited if trying to lose weight. It should be a given in any diet that fruit contains sugar, albeit natural.
That being said, the co-worker you spoke with didn't want to hear the truth. I wouldn't waste my time with the atittude as she seems very set in her ways, even though she was asking for your input on her lack of weight loss using her methods. More than with any other diet, Paleo/Primal has taught me to try out different methods for how I lose weight to see what works for my body. For instance, if I eat around 1200-1400 calories daily, it's because I'm not hungry and am actively listening to my body. My BMR is somewhere around 1552 but I eat as I'm hungry, not to meet a number. I'm also not working out as much which is nice too, and still losing weight.
It's not a simple, eat-this-and-not-that type of diet. There's just so much more to it than is invaluable in developing a good relationship with our food. I no longer feel like I'm a slave to my diet which is incredibly empowering.0 -
Hmmm and YOU have lost weight and she has NOT!0

It's funny how she said she's doing the same thing as you, stating "just like that" and hasn't lost weigh when you have...... and STILL argues that you are wrong.0

I get what you're saying about the sugar, but I was under the impression that paleo/primal encouraged more plant matter, both fruits and veggies? Is that false?0

How frustrating. I just looked at their website very briefly because I hadn't heard of it. Their intro sounds pretty good, but this rubbed me the wrong way:
"SUGAR BUSTERS!® Written by three renowned physicians and a CEO of a Fortune 500 company". $$Ch-ching$$. Everywhere there's a "®" after the name "Sugar Busters."
A look at the foods list is frightening, because people just won't adhere to the servings allowed list if they're still getting their sugar fix, nor will they read the nutrition labels to evaluate how far down on the list the sugars are, not for a lifestyle change anyway. This diet is full of processed foods and fake sugar, and I'm sure Mr. Fortune 500 CEO has got his hands in those pies.
Twinmom, I think the most telling statement in your post is a "co-worker of mine (not really a friend)". Hahaha! And I think sometimes (a lot of times) people ask about others just so they can talk about themselves.0 -

AJ, not false, but if one is trying to lose weight, limiting fruit, especially higher sugar fruits, is advisable.0 -
AJWeekley,
The Primal/Paleo diet does stress the importance of fruits and veggies, but it's emphasized that if trying to lose weight, limited fruit intake should be a consideration...one serving of fruit a day is sufficient IMO while I'm losing. However, when I get to maintenance, you bet your bottom I'm looking at those bananas in the morning along with some almond butter, followed by some melon or berries in the afternoon with my afternoon tea. Eating 4-5 servings of fruit a day, even avoiding white sugar, honey, etc, screams sugar addiction to me.0 -

Yes the basics of Primal/Paleo is a good basis of veggies and fruits.
Like Cere said for those that are looking for weight loss while adhering to Paleo/Primal guidelines watching the sugar and carbs are important...typically a fruit or veggie that is higher in sugar will also be higher in carbs...
I know for myself to maintain my weight I really have to stay under 100 Grams of carbs and watch where my sources of sugar are coming from - in order to see a steady loss I have to bump that down even further to about 50-60 grams of carbs which pretty much wipes out the bulk of the fruit I like....hence why right now i am in a holding pattern....0 -
Ah, I understand. That makes sense. Well I don't frankly care if I lose any weight, I just want to stop feeling like crap. :laugh:0
