The dreaded Atkins

I have been doing the Atkins since 30th Jan 2012 and ive lost 34lbs very easily with no exercise as yet. I have felt fitter, healthier and just generally so much happier since i started.
I suffer badly with arthritis in my hands and have been having alot of pain in my hips with a horrible dull ache all around my pelvic region and back so i have put that down to possibly having arthritic hips now too (my mum and my Grandma suffered badly too). But when various bowel changes came into play i thought id better see my doctor as my own dad and both of my Grandmas died of bowel cancer.
I saw my doctor Monday and i am now seeing the specialist on Tuesday 29th to have tests done.
My point to this story is that so far i have told my immediate family (along with you guys on this site)...and the general reaction is that its Atkins that is causing me this trouble, it messes your insides up !!!!!!
Now as much as id love it to be something so simple as that, i dont understand how a 'diet' or 'change of lifestyle' is made to be the culprit when i believe i eat so much better than i ever have?
Im just ranting really, im actually quite annoyed

Rant on, we all need to do that sometimes =D It stinks that your family isn't being entirely supportive of your lifestyle but at least it seems that they are probably doing it out of concern for you (and fear for themselves probably) than anything other than that. Doesn't make it easier for you though does it?
It is always good to take care of your health, so it is good to get these things looked at and get the "all clear" if you will. Then you carry on with what you consider your best lifestyle choices. We just need to listen to our bodies first, and give them what it says you need. Mine is tricksy and on to every attempt to lose weight, and it prefers to gain weight (we really aren't on the same page here my body and I) so I am trying to deal with that. I do low carb 6 days a week, having a higher carb day once a week to refuel, replenish leptin and glycogen and then repeat the process. I hope not so much to outwit it, as to give it what it needs so it doesn't interfere with what I want it to do. =D But this is MY process right, I don't tell my family to do the same and I expect the same respect for my decisions also.
We all have to make our own decisions and 34 pounds off is great for your overall health. Get the clear from your docs (and some peace of mind, always good!) and be happy with the process of creating your best life. A lot of people worry more about others health than their own, and we know how that ends up - we can only change our own.

Thanks for that Cristaine, i appreciate your response.
I think some members of my family would like to find a reason why they shouldn't join me with the Atkins or any diet for that matter. My eldest daughter, 30, is quite overweight and has tried various things, she took my Atkins book and tried it for 2 weeks and she lost 7 lbs...but she still said it didn't work and she gave up. What she wants is an overnight weight loss, preferably of the whole 3 stone she needs to lose. Its sad really because now other members of the family dont really say much about my loss for fear of upsetting her
But, i will carry on0 -
Several people told me I was nuts when I wanted to give low carb a shot - I've tried almost everything else and nothing worked long term or very effectively. For me, a modified Atkins (I don't want to dip too low, I work in an office & deal with alot of people daily and can't suffer ketotis breath) has helped me loose weight, gain energy and alot of my stomach issues have cleared up.
Now, one of my co-workers was also doing a modified Atkins (but to loose weight before having to do his PT's) and after a few weeks became horribly sick - like ER time sick. Turns out his system wasn't handling the transition very well, but he wasn't really replacing carbs w/ the right fats/proteins (he just dropped all carbs, low fat and no additional protein because he didn't want muscle gain).
For me, it's helped as I'm not as "sick" all the time. I too suffer arthritis pains (hips, lower back, knees, wrists and hands) and have lactose intolerance and food allergies. But... it has helped, I'm no longer sick after eating (like in 8-12hrs, I would be horribly sick after eating unless I was so careful & then sometimes it still did it).
Talk to your doctor, maybe there is something else going on and it's not the diet. Or maybe something is being triggered by the change in eating. Alot can happen to our systems over the years. See what the doctors offer (and don't take the BS "well, maybe you shouldn't be doing this" crap - doctors are not all knowing & some are better than others).
Good luck and hope you find out something soon.0 -
