Does anyone really lose a pound a week, every week?

I am 46 yrs old. 5'6 and 157 lbs. I would LOVE to lose a steady pound per week but I only do that the first month of a diet then I only lose about 2 lbs per month. I average 1600 calories with approx. 400 calories of exercise.

Should I be eating more or less or just be glad I'm losing.

I think this is reasonable--1600 plus the 400 of exercise meaning you're netting 1,200? Or are you eating the exercise calories back? So you're truly at 1600. If you are eating the exercise calories back, that makes more sense. It sounds like a slow and steady loss. 1600 is good but you could try a little less--1500? see if you notice a difference? I'm about your height (5'5) and had about 10lbs to lose. Now I'm 135lbs. I was eating about 1500--took me about 2 and half to 3 months to lose the 10lbs and I started weight training about 2 months ago. Just recently increased to 1800 to get closer to maintenance (I'm not sure exactly what it is--I think it's somewhere between 1800-2200). Now I mainly just want to get more lean and toned.

I might try that. What I do is some days I eat 1200 calories, some days I spluge and eat 2200. I average out my calories over a 7 day period, then I average out my exercise and take my grosse calories, minus exercise - so yes, I am netting 1100 - to 1200 calories a day.
