I have been going sort of low carb (less than 120 per day and try for about 1/2 that) I have been losing weight. I also have high blood pressure and take two medicines a day for it. I was 400 lbs. on 10/11/11

I was told I'm type 2 on 10/11/11. I was put on Met. but had issues with it. So the Doctor gave me a script for something else, but said I could try to get control of it myself and we will see what my next HbAc1 reading is. My last one was 9% last October. I have lost 90 lbs. since October and my daily BG readings are usually less than 120.

I heard some good things about DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) so I am really thinking of going for it. If anyone has any experience with the DASH Diet please give me your thoughts on it.

amazing weight loss! I've heard about DASH but don't know anyone who tried it. It sounds like a winner! It is just so darn hard to get away from sodium unless you make every thing from scratch. I also on BP meds. Salt has become a battle I rarely win. Very frustrating.

I like this in theory, but wonder if the carbs are too high on the sample diet I saw.

    Thoughts?

Skimmed through the Mayo clinic article. It looks like a sensible, healthy diet. There is no reason not to do it and see how it works. Keep testing to see how different foods affects your BG. The standard ADA Diabetic diet is also very sensible.

You have done an amazing job losing weight and your BG is excellent even though you still have some weight to lose. Keep up the good work.

i have heard of the dash diet. but, that's it. i am a diet plan junkie. will have to look into that. i am always looking for the magic diet. but, i have realized there isn't one. it's the one "diet", "way of eating" that works for you. that's the magic one.

afm: right now for me i am doing weight watchers. my DD came over one night and said "let's go mom, we are doing weight watchers." told her i didn't have the money, she paid. DH just gave me that look. than after 2 weeks i lost weight. he told me as long as i worked it and i was lossing weight i could stay. that was the 18-19 weeks ago. through that program i have lost 28 & change of my total 74. the rest i lost counting carbs.

you have to find your magic one. so go for it and see what happens. good luck and keep us posted.

I bought the book The Dash Diet action plan and download the iphone app because I read an article that it was the top ranked diet by NY Times or something, but I have yet to read it or do anything with it.

Here are my blood readings from the Accu-chek Aviva meter for the time I got it 2/23/12 to 6/27/12 when I was eating low carbs.

Here are the readings from 6/28/12 to 7/29/12 while learning the DASH Diet

    Hope they are big enough.

Well it is cutting off the right side but if I make them smaller so they fit you can't really read them. Anyway the point is on DASH average (mg/dL) is 108.9 and 113.7 on the low carb. Highest on DASH was 137 and highest on low carb was 163. Lowest on DASH was 87 and lowest on low carb was 80. There was 64 readings on DASH and 255 on low carb so chances are I had worse eating days out of 255 than 64 (two readings a day for 127 days on low carb and 32 days on DASH). I am just happy that it is a little better on DASH. I was worried that adding carbs and sugar back into my diet would raise the bG.

Glad the diet is working for you. If you are liking it better than low carb then keep it up.
