What do you do on road trips?

I'm leaving this afternoon, so it's a little late to be planning to eat paleo for the whole drive, but I was just thinking: what do you all do on road trips? Every summer we take at least one long trip to visit family. It's a 2-day drive to my family, then we cross the state to visit his family, and then we dead-head one long day's drive back home. I know I can watch what I eat while we're there, because there are grocery stores available. But what about the actual drive there and back? All our snacks for the trip are fairly decent -- fruit leathers, beef jerky, that kind of thing. But we'll have to stop for actual meals. What do you folks do? Do you just carry along cold food? Do you only stop at steakhouses? Do you get a salad in the McD's drive-thru and just accept that it's the best you can do (which is probably what I'm going to do this trip)?

When I have to eat out and do things like drive through I try and stick with salads with the grilled chicken (no dressing no croutons - Wendy's has a pretty kick *kitten* Cobb salad one if you are primal...I dont' eat a whole lot of dairy but I will scarf up the blue cheese on this one - with the blue cheese you really don't need any sort of dressing anyway) _ Most of them will be higher in sodium since the chicken they (basically any fast food place) use are injected with flavorings and stuff and will be higher in sodium.

If you have Chick-fil-A's they now have grilled chicken nuggets - I buy the 6 nugget kids meal and get a fruit cup as the side.

Are the fruit leathers and beef jerky homemade - if not be careful as added sugars abound in those things (the fruit leathers even homemade will probably be quite high in sugars since it takes a lot fo dried fruit for one piece) - along with things like soy and other preservative like chemicals.

Pork rinds? If you can find some Caroline County Snacks Pork rinds they are pure paleo - it doesn't say on the package or their website so I e-mailed them - they fry up in Lard...and the calorie count for the pork rinds are managable - 80 calories per serving (about 10 rinds)

You may want to bring along a cooler - throw in some individual packages of guacmole (I have found Walmart carries thier house brand - 6 individual servings) and some baby carrots and red pepper strips (or scoop up with pork rinds) - grab some individual serving pouches or cans of tuna or chopped chicken in water or olive oil? Hillshire farm also have cooked prepackaged chicken breasts (I have only found these at a Target supercenter) - like the fast food place a little higher in sodium but for convience sake not bad at all...
