Possibly Sidelined!!

I'm so frustrated right now. I stubbed my left pinky toe on Tuesday. By Thursday morning it was really throbbing. I attempted a run Thursday morning and was only able to walk a block before I had to turn around. Any kind of pressure causes it to throb. In other words I can only wear flip flops right now, so trying to stuff my toe into my running shoes is not happening. My 5k is a week from Sunday. I haven't been able to run all week. I'm sure that I will still be able to do the 3.2 miles given all of the training that I've done - I may not have as good of a time as I could've had. But what I'm really worried about is that it won't heal in time and I'll be sidelined from my first race. I'm trying to mentally prepare for this possibility - any thoughts? I think it's frustrating because this is my first race since getting into running and resolving to lose my weight. I've worked hard so that I could do this and it's frustrating to be sidelined because I rammed my toe into a stepstool walking from one side of my kitchen to the other. Ugh!!!

Try to relax and know that that toe will be fine as long as you give it time to heal.
Injuries have a habit of becoming big problems ONLY if you get impatient. There will be many races for you to run so be wise about the injury !

Have you been to the doctor about it? what do they say?

I don't know how long these things take to heal but if the doctor seems to think you should be right by then,
I say you will be fine to run the distance.

At the end of the day the last week before a race, you taper out anyway and in all reality even without your injury, none of the training you do now so close to the race, is really going to make a huge difference to your fitness etc for the race.
You have already prepared for that well and truly over the last few months :)

So just concentrate on perhaps strength training, strengthening your core, if you can do some swimming, rowing or bike work for cardio maybe do a bit of that?

However as far as the frustration of not being able to run goes, i totally understand where you are coming from! Its amazing how much we come to rely on our runs for so many different things like time out, release, happy feeling, cal burn etc ...
You must be feeling so lost as well :( But don't try and rush the whole thing or your running will end up being put off for longer.

I really hope your toe will be fine by then and we will be reading of your glowing report for your first fun run :D

I had my toe x-rayed this morning. It's NOT broken. Woot! Happy dance!!!! It's still very tender. The nurse (a runner) gave me some tips for getting my toe comfy in my running shoes. So now I'm trying to figure out my plan of attack for this week with the 5k on Sunday. I definitely want to rest it over the weekend. I'd like to get one or two runs in next week so that I know for sure it will feel fine during the 5k. I may lighten the running load though and do biking or swimming while my toe is resting. Also, I could do some pilates for sure. Thanks for letting me vent and whine!
