You should ask her for a referral to do the class for diabetes nutrition. You may also want to see a diabetic nutriontionist/dietian one on one. These things are covered under most insurances. Once you know the basics you can understand better all the information available online.

If you decide you need a specialist you would see and Endocrinologist. I see one as I am not in control right now. Their offices are FULL of information on diabetes. But honestly, most of what I learn, I learn from the web. If something doesn't seem right to me I write it down to ask him at my next visit.

I think it depends on how well you are doing in bringing your glucose under control and how well you have come in understanding this disease and the management of it. I just see my primary, and as long as my A1C stays below 6.0, he is probably the only doctor I will see. Truth be told, I learn far more from personal research and testing, and from fellow diabetics, than I have from any doctor.

It never hurts to get all the information you can, so if your insurance pays for a diabetic education/nutrition class, I'd get a referral for one. I didn't see eye-to-eye with the nutritionist (she wanted me to eat way too many carbs for my liking and what glucose levels were acceptable to her were not acceptable to me) but I still learned some things from her that have been helpful.

I see an endocrinologist even though I'm under great control. She's just got the demeanor and knowledge I want for this disease. I have a GP for everything else.
