I've been eating at around 1200-1300 cals for over a year and lost 85 lbs that way until I plateaued. So I decided to start EM2WL 3 weeks ago, and have been eating my TDEE (1947) and have my macros set on 40, 30, 30. For my exercise, I do 30 Day Shred 3x a week. I was expecting a little weight gain, but when I got on the scale this morning after 3 weeks, I have already gained 10lbs!! I can see the weight packing on my face and arms....

I guess my bigger question is how much weight should I expect to gain throughout this 8 week reset process????

I'm not an expert but that does seem like a lot. I could be wrong. Can you post your numbers? Maybe someone more knowledgeable can help you!

It's just bloat and water retention. There is no way you gained an actual 10 lbs in 3 weeks eating 1947 calories.

I would say you won't gain much more now but everyone is different. Did you take your measurements?
  • Did you check out the what to expect sticky?

i gained 8-9lbs as well. I have been eating low calories and low points for few years so I guess it takes time to repair our metabolism as well as muscles and everything else. I have 4 more weeks before I do the cut.. maybe I will do the cut within 2 weeks. I'll see how things are by then.
  • Yes I did see the what to expect sticky, I just didn't think I would gain THAT much weight in such a short period of time. And I did take measurements but they haven't really changed a whole lot. I'll keep sticking with it though because I know I lost those pounds in an unhealthy way so my body is obviously going to react badly to the calorie increase. I actually did weigh myself again this morning and it dropped down a few pounds so I guess some of it was just water weight.
  • I am more curious to know how much other people have gained doing EM2WL metabolism reset, just so I can get a rough idea of how much weight I should expect to see

The fact that your measurements havent changed but you "gained" 10 pounds, shows things are working. You cant physically gain 10 pounds in three weeks unless you are eating 10x3500 cals EXTRA in that time frame.. Pretty sure you didnt.
Bloat and water retention are definitely at fault. Plus, your body is hanging on to everything because it thinks you are in a binge cycle, and it has no idea when you might drop back down to low cals. Your body needs some time to trust you again, and it may or may not "gain" a little bit more weight. Have faith that it WILL come off in time.

Great advice! Hang in there, eventually the gain will plateau and the weight will start coming off. The main thing its to keep your eating as clean as possible, and stay consistent with your calories. The tendency its to go back and forth between high and low calorie in the beginning when you feel stuffed and bloated. I know, I've been there, but it was a huge mistake. Your body will adjust! Have you watched the consistency video?

In the first 2 weeks I gained 8lb of water and glycogen stores. Since then that all went away and I've shed a a total of 6-7 inches off of my hips and chest alone and I am only up 1lb since my start.

Now this isn't fat, because my muscles are becoming defined. I can see and feel my legs and arms bulging.

So while the scale will tell you that you're up, when the entire process is started you won't be fatter, you'll be in better shape/thinner/happier/healthier.

My advice is and always has been to everyone: throw away the sale and invest in mirrors and measuring tapes.
  • Thank you everyone. I'm throwing the scale in the closet and forgetting about it. I definitely do "feel" fatter and I actually think my measurements have increased slightly :( I know it has to be my body holding onto every gram of fat I eat, I will try to have faith that the process will work because I truly just want to be healthier.
