Hello! I have heard so much about these various tools for calculating daily burn, but I am lost as to which is best. I would love to hear some pros and cons of people who have used them!
Thanks!
Thanks!

I love my bugg! It's so much nicer to look at the display & get my TDEE instead of doing all the math. It's a great motivator. The fitbit is easier to hide for sure, but not as accurate. Bugg has 6mo free membership then broken down its like .25cents a day. Love it though!!!!0

I'm pretty sure I'm gonna get the BodyMedia, just not sure if it will be the fit or core~0 -
I like my fitbit - it's more discrete and you don't have to pay a subscription. Also their customer service is second to none.0

I've had my Body Media Fit (link version) for over a month now and I LOVE it!!! It''s definitely noticeable on your arm but I don't feel like it's bulky or anything.
I love that I can look at the app on my iPhone at any point during the day and see exactly what my burn is in real time. I don't have to guess at what my burn is...I know exactly what my TDEE is on a daily basis. And then I average it out so I know exactly how many calories to eat to reach my deficit.
It's worth every penny, IMO.0 -
So I am curious as to if your burns were more than you thought from these devices. I use a less accurate fit bit type that only recognizes pedometer steps. I was shocked to find out I burned like 800 to 1000 cal a day just walking around.0

I bought a body media 6 weeks ago. It takes the stress out of guessing what your tdee is. I have a desk job so had my tdee as 1650 from fat2fit web-from my body media I'm avg 2000 a day tdee without exercise which prob explains why I was finding it hard to shift my last 5poubds. With a defecit that I thought was 500, it was more like 900+
And my body was clingin onto fat I guess. Starting today I'm eating my avg tdee taken from
Body med over 7 days, -15%.
Defo worth the investment. If you have any questions, message me.0 -
It would be really nice to know the exact burn instead of a formulaic number. *adds to wish list.0

I use a HRM with my fitbit when exercising to calculate the burn.
I also wear my HRM on random days to see how "out" my fitbit is - but it's surprisingly accurate.0 -
As far as accuracy, they all use the same technology.
I discussed them in the third section here: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/blog/UponThisRock/view/much-ado-about-heart-rate-2639940 -

Fit bitt does not use the same technology. It doesn't monitor your bodies physiological response (temperature, galvanic skin response, heat flux etc.) only steps and other movement; therefore it is less accurate. More ways to monitor your body = increased accuracy.
The bodybugg and bodymedia devices may be inconvenient due to needing skin contact but it's for this reason that they are more accurate.0 -

I didn't know that, thanks.0 -

I have a fitbit, I like it and find the data/webpage usable and sleep tracking was a nice feature. I didn't want a Bodymedia because I don't want something that is sticking out all day and getting in the way with it being on your arm.. or all the questions and stuff, fitbit goes right on my belt clip.. and the subscription price was a real turn off.. I plan on getting a HRM for my more intense cardio workouts and that should then be a great combo.0

I have both the Fitbit Ultra and now a Bodymedia Fit LINK. I find the BM Fit LINK to be more accurate than the Fitbit. It is especially accurate (compared to a stop watch) on how long your workouts are, and how intense they are (compared to my HRM)
Ultimately when working out my HRM is best, but I get a full days picture with the BM Fit. I wore all 3 (BM Fit, Fitbit and Polar FT7) on my last hike lol.
I dont think I will ever be in a situation with "info overload" I love the numbers game.0 -
I'm glad that I started wearing mine again because I was seriously underestimating my TDEE!!!!!
I have the BMF Link one, so I can check it through the day.0 -
I really really really want a body media fit.
I think when I go back to work in November I will get one...or sooner if I come into some money.0 -
I just got a BodyMedia Fit last week and love it so far! When I started EM2WL, one of the things that made me the most nervous was being unsure of my daily calorie burns - I did not like trusting the on-line calculators... I understood the process and trusted the math behind it, but did not feel like I was actually burning that much each day.
The on-line calculators have my TDEE at 2,215 (based on Moderate Activity). The BodyMeda has my average over the past 5 days at 2,482. A fairly significant difference I think... Based on those 5 days I should be eating 2,100 calories rather than the 1,880 I have been eating since I started (based on the calculators)
I am going to give it a full week and then get an average of the BodyMedia data and re-calculate and adjust upwards.0 -
I've had the BMF since February and it has revolutionized how I live my life. It is great to see the calories burned during the day, you can target timeframes to see how many calories you burned at the gym, driving, cooking/cleaning, sleeping...you can even see minute-to-minute what you burned that minute. When you plug in the calories you ate, you see your deficit within 90% accuracy.
I really get motivated when I can break my day apart by the numbers. I'm kinda nerdy with fitness/eating, in the respect that I really get off on all the data I can gather on my specific performance, and then compare that to other days. I feel like I have more knowledge and more power, and that keeps me going strong and pushing myself.
It is a little bulky, and you have to wear it on your left arm for it to work, so in that respect, it's a bit of a hassle. But I can honestly say I don't feel it anymore. It was new and strange for about 30 days, and then it just clicked in as habit and it feels weird when it's not there!
Anyways, I looooove it. I blame it for 30 of my 40 pounds lost. Good luck on your hunt!0 -
Is it noticeable under shirts?0

Is it noticeable under shirts?
Yes it is noticable on your upper left arm - not a big deal, but if you are wearing a tight sleeved shirt, you will see it (or obviously anything sleeveless, or really short sleeved...)0 -

If anyone notices it, just do what I do. Tell them that the judge let me wear this instead of the ankle one.0 -

Hahahah I am going to try that ... especially at the bar.0 -
I'm a teacher of grade 2 students so I'm not sure what I would tell them. I don't mind other adults asking but I'm not sure I feel comfortable explaining it to my students who will then go home and share my business with their parents. Hmmm a lot to think about.0

So i read a few reviews of the BMF Link having issues of some sort, that didn't really make sense to me, and i am not sure if they are earlier model issues?
Apparently these issues are not the case with the regular version??
Sorry i know that is really vague! :blushing:
So basically those with the normal one not the LINK how much of a pain is it having to wait to be at a computer to link it all up??
Those with the LINK have you had any issues with them?0 -

Heidi Id tell them that I am trying to be my healthiest healthy I can be and the armband is there to help me with doing it right.
Very plain and straight forward fir them to understand and if they tell their parents I think you would get lots of respect for that.0 -

The only issue I had was that is was a little quirky to get it to set up to the bluetooth for my phone. So if I want to check my stats I have to turn on Bluetooth (I leave it off due the drain on my cell's battery....my phone sucks!!!) and then press the sync button on the BMF Link and then hit the BMF app on my phone. It works every time that way.
I love it!!!!0 -
Hey guys!
Im utterly confused about all this. I'm planning on eating at TDEE for about 6 weeks but alot of that depends on my body's response to eating at TDEE. I did a metabolism reset back around Christmas and it was pretty much a disaster in inconsistency.
I love the way I feel eating at TDEE and my workouts are definitely thanking me!
However, I'm questioning my true TDEE after reading all this info on bodyfits, bodybuggs, fitbits, oh my...seems like I keep thinking I need one, then someone talks sense into me, and I come down off the ledge.
I understand all of these devices really are just giving us an estimation. And they are ALOT of money that would be better used, IMO, on things like more weights. :P
I do have a HRM and I don't even use it. If I do buy a bodyfit, I just plan on using it for a couple weeks to get a better idea of my true TDEE and then use that. I really dont want to have to use my HRM and the body fit. Is there a way around this or is the body fit only accurate with a HRM?
Most of my workouts are strength training, so not sure this would be accurate. I've also read that HRMs are really not all that accurate, either, so IDK...
What are your thoughts?0
