Do you have to do the barbell squat or can you do one of the other squats listed in the book??

You can do dumbell squats- but I think most people doing an alternate recommend the goblet squat since it really forces you to have spectacular form, unlike dumbells where it can get twitchy.0

You can do other squats instead-I , too, agree that the front squat or the goblet squat are best alternatives. But at some point your hands will not be able to hold heavier weights and then you will need to move to barbell squats.0

I started with goblet squats and it worked out well for me. I was able to really focus on my form before tackling the squat rack at the gym.0

You can start with just a bodyweight squat. (I did.) So long as you are dumping below parallel (or right at parallel) - THAT is what is key.0

Hah, I had to go look up goblet squats. That's what I'm doing right now. I will transition to barbells. and started with bodyweight squats.0
