Having Trouble Adjusting to "Normal" Thyroid Function

Hi everyone! I'm new to the group and need some help. I had an appointment with my endocrinologist today and I guess I'm just not happy.

I was diagnosed with Graves Disease (Hyperthyroidism) about a year ago. When diagnosed, my TSH level was .01. Since then, I've been on this roller coaster trying to get my Thyroid levels normal. They put me on high doses of Methimazole to start bringing my TSH back up and then started backing off as it got closer to normal. Last fall I ended up HYPOthyroid because of the medication levels. My hair started falling out (I thought I'd be bald by New Year's) and getting out of bed in the morning was usually my biggest accomplishment/challenge at that point. So we kept adjusting the levels of the medication. My doc gave me a dosage range at my appointment 3 months ago and told me to base it on how I feel. I dropped my levels a few weeks back because I'm feeling good but I keep gaining weight (still not back up to my all time high from last fall, thank God!). However, today my doc told me to increase the dosage because I'm hyperthyroid again. She's not trying to get me really far into the normal range because she knows I feel better at this end of the scale, but my TSH was .17 and she just wasn't comfy with me staying at that level.

I had my thyroid levels checked as a teen and they were normal. I was 28 when I was diagnosed with Graves and I have no idea at what point in between my thyroid stopped working correctly. Prior to my diagnosis (and more specifically my treatment), I could literally eat anything I wanted in any amount any time and my weight wouldn't change more than +/- 2lbs. Now, I look at cookie and I gain 2 lbs.

I know I'm spoiled because some people have ALWAYS had to watch what they eat. My question is this: How do I get used to this and accept this? I'm so sick of this roller coaster, and I'm so sick of counting every last calorie and still not being able to lose the weight I gained.

Anyone have any tips for adjusting?

    Hi LRoy,
    Welcome :flowerforyou:
Sorry you're going through all of that. It certainly is a battle, getting the levels right (for some people anyway)! I don't know too much about hyperthyroidism, as I have hypo. But if you're swinging into hypo, maybe the advice for that would help you now. I have learned a lot here, about the supplements that help, and adding Virgin Coconut Oil to my very strict low-carb-high-protein diet has helped me start losing wt. at a quicker rate. (surprising because its oil & more calories)! It also has helped me feel SO GOOD!
vitamin D; evening primrose oil, selenium... all help you feel better. I exercise at least 40 minutes a day, every day, have to, to lose wt.

Read, read, read here. There are some good threads & great tips from everyone here.
